Ben Clark argues Montana should rethink highway funding and vehicle weight taxes. Big Timber residents complain of severe Helena weather with temperatures dipping below zero.
Gale Wick and Rudolph Fallang uncovered two nearly petrified chicken eggs in an attic behind the Churchill and Amery Grocery site during demolition. The eggs, likely 30 years old, rested in a straw nest. A bottle found encased in a tree grown around it was also discovered at the site.
The Sweet Grass County Soil Conservation District will hold its annual meeting Thursday January 20 at 7 30 p m at the American Legion hall. Landowners vote for district supervisors with two three year terms and one two year term. IFYE speakers David Leuthold and Keith Kimball share foreign lands experiences. Dr J W Larry of the University of Montana Botany Dept is principal speaker. Door prizes lunch and music follow.
McLean Clark was installed as chancellor commander of Big Timber lodge No 25 Knights of Pythias with Teddy Thompson overseeing the ritual. Officers named include Forest Keller grand master at arms Max Officer grand prelate Walt Dutton and others. the group announced year plans and discussed a toy drive for Christmas baskets.
Harold Esp and Harold Braley returned from New Mexico with 35 elk for the New Mexico Game and Fish Department. The elk, trapped in Yellowstone Park, were hauled to the port of entry for shipment and eventual transplant. The trip, started Wednesday at 8 PM and ending Friday at 5 PM, was nonstop due to the animals. All elk arrived in good shape.
Funeral services for Sivert O. Mydland, a pioneer Sweet Grass county resident, were conducted Friday at 2:00 p.m. at the Big Timber Lutheran church by Rev. Wm. A. Hood. Mydland died Monday at the Sweet Grass Community hospital after a lengthy illness. Music by Mrs. Ted C. Busha and Mrs. Charles Nicholson with E. O. Overland at the organ. Pallbearers were Victor Tronrud, Leif Anderson, Thorvald Aalgaard, Toby Osen, John Boe, and Chris Albertson. Burial followed in Mountain View cemetery.
George Henderson and John Pope with T. J. Pope bagged a 100 pound female lion near the Brewer ranch on West Boulder after a dawn hunt. Ben Strickland and Franklin Grosfield arrived for photos as the lion treed after a long chase with dogs. several more lions are reported in the area.
Washington Montana congressman D Ewart formerly from the second Montana district 1945 1954 was named special assistant to Secretary Benson to serve as liaison between Congress and the Agriculture Department He will convey the department view of policy to Congress and offer congressional ideas on agricultural developments D Ewart also served in the Montana house in 1937 and 1939 the state senate from 1941 to 1954 and in the 79th Congress until his defeat in 1954 He failed to win the Senate seat in the race following James Murray's retirement
Arnold Johnson was elected director of the Big Timber Building and Loan association at its annual meeting this week succeeding the late E L Frang. W K Amery H L Brockway Will Churchill Forest Keller Dean Lowry C E Smart S H Solberg and Harold Boe were named as directors. Churchill was elected president Amery vice president Boe secretary treasurer Solberg assistant secretary. The treasurer reported a good year with over 50000 in gains and dividends totaling 12818 82 to stockholders.
A large survey by the American Medical Association’s Bureau of Medical Economic Research finds women outlive and outhealth men in every age group, including childbearing years. Men show higher hospital morbidity across all ages, while women comprise just over half the population.
Mrs Orvin B Flare wife of Montana representative writes home from Washington D C about settling in at 426 E Boulevard Drive Alexandria. She describes ceremonial duties meeting congressmen photographers and tours of Mt Vernon and the Smithsonian with husband Kenneth and children and notes frequent planes overhead and a visit from friends Roy Rogers on TV. Kenneth heads to Montana Wednesday morning.
Montana Attorney General Arnold H. Olsen holds licensed fishermen may fish in navigable streams and the state can negotiate access with landowners for streams bordered by private property. He clarifies that streams capable of floating logs or having floated logs are navigable in fact under 1933 law, and those already declared navigable require no further declaration.
Dr D Claiborn was reelected president of Citizens Bank and Trust Co at the annual meeting Tuesday night. Chas McDonnell was named vice president and J M Schneider cashier. Directors include Elmer Arneson A Ronald McDonnell W K Amery Carl Bue Leif Anderson Chas McDonnell and Dr Claiborn.
Reverend Hugh Herbert of First Methodist Church Bozeman will deliver the principal address at the Jaycee Distinguished Service Award banquetMonday. Kenneth Davenport will preside with Karl Bryan as toastmaster and Hilmar Cook leading the pledge of allegiance.
Ex president to receive a pin from national Jaycee director Bruce Kamhoot at a ceremony in Bozeman. Davenport to receive Boss of the Year, O J Paulson to receive Distinguished Service, with Schneider delivering the benediction. Rev Herbert, native of Spokane and Montana State graduate, to give vital statistics and speak. He lists family, height, weight, career, and hobbies.
D M Hamilton 85 uncle of Mrs Jack McLaren and Mrs Harold Mjolsness died Monday at Christensen nursing home. Funeral at St Marys Livingston with burial in Rosary cemetery. Born August 15 1869 in Chatsworth Ontario he lived in Livingston Park County rancher meat market owner and supplier to family. Survivors include daughter in Billings son in California brother in Chatsworth seven grandchildren three great grandchildren.
Washington announces a new 15 cent per animal unit month grazing fee for federal range use in western districts for 1955 and 1956. The 11 cent grazing charge plus 4 cent improvement fee replaces the former 12 cent rate, with beef and lamb prices tied to future charges after 1957.
Dr. Carl I. Pirkle of the U S Public Health Service cites experiments at the Atlanta federal penitentiary where about 300 prisoners volunteered to ingest malaria infected bites to test primaquine and chloroquine. The six year program determined effective drug combinations and duration for treatment and prevention with $50 compensation and 30 days cut from sentences. no casualties occurred.
The Sheepherders lose 65 52 at Forsyth Dogies and 52 38 to Hardin on weekend trip. Berg and Esp lead in first game with 12 points each while Reidelbach adds 10. Hardin leads 15 7 early and holds on. Hauge tops scoring with 11 for Big Timber, Reidelbach 9, Berg 8. Team toured Colstrip strip mining, Custer battlefield exhibits, and a museum, observing scale models before returning home.
Funeral services for Dale F. Smith a Boulder rancher and trucker who died in a freak accident north of Livingston were held Friday at 10 30 a m at Lowry Funeral Home with Rev E Brentwood Barker officiating. Interment followed at Sunset Memorial Gardens in Billings with rites at 1 15 p m.
Washington Secretary of the Army Stevens rejected rumors he would resign saying he has never felt better and would not leave office. The denial came Friday in response to published reports about his departure.
Central Here hosts a league game with the Sheepherders versus the Billings Central Rams on the local floor Friday. Billings holds second place in the conference, with the Billings and Big Timber B squads scheduled for the 7 o'clock preliminary.
