A group of six mothers writes in to oppose S G H S policies on girls wearing jeans and slacks. They argue parents decide clothing and warm clothing aids learning, urge letters to Mr Fisher, defend freedoms of speech, and question the impact on lockers and daily dress.
The letter traces public land friction in national forests, arguing government delay allowed private claims and citing rising posted lands. It contrasts property rights with hunting and recreation, warns of dwindling access, and links conduct of hunters to tensions with ranchers. It also reports Lloyd Eder’s polio recovery and hospital care in California.
Rep. Orvin B. Fjare of Big Timber is named a member of the House committee on education and labor. He says the assignment lets him work for young people and labor rights, noting interest in agriculture and interior affairs but openings were unavailable.
Frances Brink an IFYE delegate who spent summer 1954 in Switzerland will tour Sweet Grass county giving talks and slides. Her schedule includes January 25 Allman hall Melville 2 pm Porcupine Butte 4-H. 25 Dallman hall 6 30 pm Lions. 26 Grey Cliff school 2 pm Grey Cliff Hillbillies and Progressive 4-H. 26 Glasston school 8 pm Otter Creek Beavers 4-H. 27 Big Timber Creek Community hall 8 pm. 27 McLeod 2 30 pm Boulder 4-H.
Grace Severance reports a March of Dimes total of 3580 collected so far in the current campaign. Mrs Earl Bouse chairs the mothers march and workers will collect Friday evening January 28 between 7 and 8. Residents may leave porch lights on or request a call for contributions. Coin folders have been placed at schools to involve children in the polio fight. The National Foundation notes last year was the third worst polio year on record and every donation counts as vaccine may be licensed in 1955 to make this year the greatest.
Bill Townsend was dismissed from the Community hospital Tuesday after receiving treatment for several days following injuries suffered in a car accident.
The Montana Farm Bureau district 3 meeting was held in Harlowton on Thursday January 13 with representatives from Wheatland Fergus Sweet Grass Meagher and Park counties. State President George Diehl spoke on building action into Farm Bureau. Attendees from Sweet Grass included Adams Yost Tronrud Grosfield Johnson and the Marshalls.
A public hearing on Paul Van Cleve’s proposed land exchange with the Forest Service is scheduled for February 10 at 10 a.m. in Livingston at the American Legion hall. Regional Forester P D Hanson was advised and Howard Rooney will chair the Board of Appeals session.
The board of review appointed by the secretary to advise on forest service appeal decisions invites written testimony by February 7. Oral statements are allowed but limited. Missoula regional forester will collect intentions and time needs. About 20 minutes per witness may be available, and witnesses should indicate support or opposition to the exchange plan.
The TB seal sale rose to 882.25 this week from 853.65 a week earlier, with 19.60 from pencils at the grade school included. Co chairs Dr. Olive Baskett and Mrs. Evelyn Grosfield said they will review the county file and send recall cards to nonrespondents to avoid extra work and expense.
The Yellowstone Valley Council fund drive, sponsored by the Lions club, will be held Wednesday January 26 to raise the council operating budget. The money funds training for leaders, organizing new units, council office services, scout executives, camps, and promotion to serve more Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts, and Explorers.
Robert Elgas of Big Timber Montana was saved from Dungeness Harbor waters near Port Angeles Washington by a Port Angeles Coast Guard helicopter crew. He capsized in an open boat, was found half a mile from Jamestown beach wearing a life jacket, hoisted aboard almost unconscious, and taken to Olympic Memorial hospital for shock and exposure.
Homer Millegan, head of the local Farmers Home Administration office, will transfer to Plentywood effective February 1. He and his wife have resided five years here, the longest period at any one place since his FHA service. Andrew Strickland of Plentywood will succeed him.
Thomas Kuhn was admitted to Community hospital last Thursday for medical care and discharged Tuesday. Pat Pederson was a medical patient from Saturday until Wednesday at the same facility.
Walter Dutton was named the outstanding young man of the year at the annual Jaycee banquet. Mervin Sell is the new boss of the year for the Pioneer. The program featured Rev. Hugh Herbert, Lions President O. J. Paulson and other local figures. Doris Thomas performed vocal selections as the group heard a talk on the theme of failure and success.
Big Timber’s Herders struggled in two losses 67 52 to Billings Central and 61 51 to Harlowton. Bray led with 17 points followed by Reidelbach 14 Berg 10 and Lomeland 5. Harlowton’s Varland had 20 for the Engineers as Big Timber’s defense and late rally were not enough.
A telegram from Rep. Orvin Flare reports REA approved a $295,000 loan last Thursday afternoon to extend 46 miles of distribution lines serving 53 rural connections in Park Sweet Grass and Gallatin counties. The project includes five irrigation loads and improvements to enhance service for all local consumers.
Trustees of school district No 1 call a special meeting at the new grade school on February 2 at 7 30 p m to finalize a resolution declaring the old grade school obsolete and unsuitable and to provide for its sale. Electors may protest the resolution at that time.
The Columbus Cougars invade the Sheepherder court for a return bout Friday night with Big Timber grade schools as the preliminary. Big Timber lost to the Cougars 63 to 42 in an earlier meeting.
