The Melville rural school presents a fine Christmas program led by Mrs. Marie Chapel and Mrs. Chas Harper. A wide Melville area attendance gathered for singing recitations and Santa visits, enjoying a traditional community get together after the show.
Several festive displays brighten town as the courthouse Nativity scene and two standout decorations at the grade school and Community hospital catch eye. The grade school floodlights are by Mrs Robi Woolley, a third grade teacher, while the hospital display involves nurses and hospital staff.
The column notes Lloyd Casagranda of Montana Fish and Game photographed yearling deer with unusual spread, unusual for the area. Critics blame state agencies for restrictive seasons while praising park service as the only bureau rival.
Miss Diana Olsen arrived Sunday from San Francisco to spend the holidays with Mr. and Mrs. Torval Olsen. She will return January 2 by air to be with Heald College in California. New patients at Big Timber rest home include Miss Clara Grosfield Mrs Violet Thompson and George Tronrud, increasing total patients to fourteen.
Edward Ries Thompson 72 died at Community hospital after a three year illness. Born March 23, 1889, he lived in Melrose Bridger creek ranches before moving to Big Timber in 1925 to work for Douthett Lumber Co. Funeral 2 p.m. Saturday at Lowry Chapel with Mountain View burial. survived by widow Emily Hanson Thompson four daughters four sons 14 grandchildren four great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Mary Rose McCormick 11 months old, daughter of Mr and Mrs James A McCormick of Billings and granddaughter of Mr and Mrs F F Crockett, died at a Cody Wyoming hospital following a brief illness. Death attributed to a malformed adrenal gland. Surviving: a brother William Rennie. Funeral held at Ballard funeral home Cody with Rev Lester Edgett officiating. burial in Riverside Cemetery Cody.
The First Congregational church plans a Sunday 11 pm candlelight service led by the Pilgrim Fellowship with lighted candles symbolizing carrying Christ’s light. Morning worship Sunday at 10 30, nursery care available, no church school, and choirs to participate. Homeland Circle Christmas tea today at 3 pm with Mrs. Jerry Egeland in charge.
A list of Big Timber teachers and spouses plans Christmas trips or stays. Several will remain in Big Timber for rest while others travel to Lewistown Butte Columbus Billings Circle Seattle Kalispell Huntley Pompeys Pillar and Salt Lake City.
The Margaret Deegan chapter of the National Honor Society welcomed seven new members at formal initiation at the high school Tuesday evening with President Dixie Warp leading. Linda Clark, John Paulson, Gary Branae, Alex Adams, and Ray Lomeland participated. pins were awarded to Carol Raisland Joyce Woodhouse Coralee Beer Shirley Branaé Kathy Tyler Sex Aliman Charles Baldwin.
After weeks of below freezing, Sweet Grass county probes a warm break with temperatures rising past 50 from subzero readings. Court house highs and lows show fluctuation through mid December, while Forest Ranger Don Niven plans Christmas in Bozeman with his mother, Mrs. Fannie Niven.
Charles Thomas Davis 88 died Monday at Community Hospital after a period as patient. Funeral Tuesday from St. Joseph Catholic Church with Rev. John Haligowski officiating. Interment at Mountain View. rosary at Lowry Chapel. Davis, born October 30, 1873 in Goss Missouri, worked for Missouri Pacific and Northern Pacific railroads, retired 1939, then ran a tourist court in Big Timber. Survived by widow Anna Gardner, one sister Bess Walters, and three nieces.
Twenty ranchers from this county rode a bus to Billings on Thursday for a meeting hosted by Morea Feed Co. About 400 people attended from Montana and Wyoming. Representatives from the Cattlemen's Association and Veterinarians' Association spoke on the benefits of Morea feed supply.
Big Timber’s basketball team split a weekend road trip, beating Forsyth Dogies 55 47 and falling to Lodge Grass Indians 68 59. Huyser led scoring with 18 points against Forsyth, while Christ and Stephens added double digits. The Lodge Grass game saw a 23 point fourth period from Big Timber not enough to overcome a 33 27 halftime deficit. Coach Duncan noted missed layups hurt the effort.

Saint Nikolaus visits on December 6 bringing a gold or black book based on child behavior, with sweets for well behaved children and a feared punishment for naughty ones.
Harold Esp and Art Elgen ferried buffalo across a weak bridge near Tower Junction in Yellowstone Park using a smaller truck. Twenty three buffalo were moved last week as the B Bar B Buffalo ranch of Gillette Wyoming contracts with Texas Meat Packers of San Francisco to trap 350 to 400 head on the Lamar river. Harold plans another trip with hay bait for park traps.
Funeral services were held at 2 p m Saturday at the EUB church in Reed Point for Elizabeth Koch Kenfield 82 who died Monday night at Sunset Manor Columbus after a long illness Rev E J Bott officiated Ed Meroney of Columbus sang Old Rugged Cross and Beautiful Isle of Somewhere Pallbearers were Carl Mysse Jack Mysse Helmuth Marlow Ambrose Brumfield Clarence Phipps and Fred Swift Burial was in Reed Point cemetery She was born April 1 1879 in Henry Illinois and married Charles C Kenfield August 10 1889 in Galesburg Ill The family moved to Montana in 1917 later living near Reed Point and then Reed Point town limits Mr Kenfield died in 1946 She had resided in Columbus nursing home for nearly eight years Survived by three daughters Mrs Nick Campanella Mrs Thorval Krone Sr of Reed Point and Mrs Orval Johnston of West Lebanon Ind two sons Claude of Anaconda and David of Reed Point one sister Mrs C A Crist of Oakland Calif ten grandchildren and twenty great grandchildren.
Keith Harlan was admitted to the Community hospital last Thursday for medical care. He is reported to be feeling better.
Mrs. Ella Williams, 70, died at Community hospital after years of illness. Born near Bozeman on Sept. 9, 1891, she married Ross Williams in 1910 and lived in Chico, Colville, Livingston, and Big Timber. Survived by husband, daughter Lois, son Frank, two sisters, and a brother. a son Keith was killed in the Philippines in 1942. Funeral at Congregational church. Interment Mountain View.
Earl Bouse and Ed Hale left for Minneapolis Friday morning to attend the funeral of John William Hughes killed in an automobile accident near Brockway Thursday night. They stopped in Glendive en route to visit George Merrick of Perth Ontario hospitalized with a fractured pelvis from being a passenger in Hughes car.
Nyla Jeanne Opland and Bernard Duane Berg exchanged vows Saturday December 9 at Big Timber Lutheran Church in a candlelight ceremony. The bride wore forget me not satin, carried a lace Bible with an orchid, and the bridal party wore emerald green brocade with pearl hats.
