Pioneer reader Grace Renfield vents about the harsh season in a playful column, riffing on Shakespeare to note that winter’s bite seems sharper than the poet’s lines. She quips that Shakespeare’s teeth were false and laments the unseen sting of cold air.
Sylvester Lavold was dismissed from the Bozeman hospital Monday following surgery December 4. The brief item notes a smaller county child count from the census and records Lavold's discharge.
The weatherman reports a harsh stretch with Friday night at two below and Sunday night at 16 below the year’s deepest. Saturday fell to 15 below and Sunday high reached zero. Swamp Creek hit 26 below, Melville area 20 to 24 below. Winds eased Tuesday raising temps into the 20s. Court house readings summarize the week.
The T Bone CowBelles hosted a Christmas tea at the Lutheran parish hall on Tuesday afternoon inviting Big Timber women. Sixty three attendees enjoyed carols readings and games. After gift exchange guests received beef party fare recipes and beef literature to take home. Hosts and servers included Mrs Morris Tronrud Sr and Mrs Sid Fraser with a beef menu of beef bread beef cream spread sandwiches beef brownies and homemade candy and cookies.
Santa Claus will visit Big Timber Saturday from 1 30 to 2 00 PM at the McLeod and Second intersection giving candy and nuts to children. The Lions Club and local businesses sponsor a free movie at the State theatre starting at 2 30 PM.
Dean Lowe, a Marine from El Toro California, returned Sunday after a leave with his parents Mr and Mrs Chas Lowe formerly of Big Timber now residing in Roseburg Oregon. He will enter a specialist school upon resuming duty. Roseburg endured unusual winter weather with heavy rains and three inches of snow washing out bridges and highways.
Christmas program conducted by Robert Woolley and Frances Schriver features band and chorus segments. Selections include Silent Night White Christmas The First Noel O Holy Night and Joy to the World with soloists Barbara Lape Mary Ellen McDonnell and Harry Berg and accompaniment by Suzanne Fallang Mary Ellen McDonnell and others. Dean Hart narrates and staging adapts three parts with Thespians presenting.
Forest Keller’s car packed with 125 pounds of candy and nuts along with toys dolls baseball bats cosmetics clothing and more traveled Monday to the orphans' home at Twin Bridges. The annual Santa delivery is organized by local businesses and coordinated by Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd Severance with assistance from the Jayceens Past Matrons and Future Farmers who sent packages this year.
Big Timber Lions defeated Columbus grade school cagers 33 to 21 on their floor. In the preliminary, Columbus fell 33 to 32 as the Lions built a 15-12 halftime lead and widened it to 21-15 by the third. Scoring leaders were Jack Simmons 10 and Larry Holton 8 for Columbus, while Stone led preliminary scoring with 15 for Big Timber.
Sheriff Thompson halted a weeks long shoplifting spree by a group of juveniles in Big Timber. Recovered items include radios tires wheels batteries and other car gear now back with stores or at the courthouse back door. The youths face probable probation though cooperative in returning items. A humorous note reports one boy offered to pay for a spotlight and quipped I waited on myself.
Linda Hammersmark daughter of Mr and Mrs Mike Hammersmark and James Mitchell Long son of Mr and Mrs Charles Long wed Sunday in Big Timber Lutheran church. Rev Ocee Johnson officiated a double ring ceremony with white mums red carnations and chrysanthemums decorating the altar. The bridal party wore red velveteen gowns and a four tier wedding cake centered the reception. The couple will live at the Hammersmark ranch east of town after a brief wedding trip. Out of town guests came from Bozeman Miles City Red Lodge Luther Columbus Billings and Livingston.
W A Denecke of Bozeman spoke on Wool Marketing at the Sweet Grass Wool Marketing Association annual meeting at the Legion hall Monday. Thirty eight growers attended as changes in marketing were outlined including larger pools and grade emphasis. Directors Clark Engle and Rasmus Roe were re-elected for three years and a new slate elected with Engle as president Clayton as VP Roe as treasurer Lavold as secretary.
Billings H. S. Hibbard of Helena was elected president, succeeding Don Travenner of Deer Lodge. New directors include John Anderson Elder James McCann Chinook and Henry Esp Lodge Grass. Resolutions oppose the wilderness bill.
Bernard Boehme transferred to a Billings hospital after initial care in Reed Point. Daniel D. Nevin enlisted in the Air Force and is stationed at Lackland AFB Texas. Nicholson funeral services drew out of town relatives including Mrs. Helen Nicholson Mrs. Gerald Cashen and Commander A D Nicholson. Cousin Lyle Retz visited to hunt with Louie Taylor and Bob McKenzie. Elda Marie Westervelt of Montana State College earned an associate in nursing from MSC at Billings Deaconess Hospital.
Helena Ernest A. Parker a Big Timber Spanish American War veteran was named by Governor Donald G. Nutter to membership on the Veterans Memorial Fund commission. He succeeds the late District Judge Jeremiah J. Lynch of Butte. Other members include James I. Purvis Missoula chairman James F. Neely Helena secretary and Grover C. Schmidt Fort Benton. Neely said the commission’s next meeting will be in May.
The First Congregational church choir will present a cantata at the 11 o'clock worship service Sunday. The Fred Waring arrangement of The Song of Christmas by Roy Ringwald features Dean Hart as narrator and is directed by Mrs. Jerry Egeland with organist Mrs. Victor Schriver. The junior choir, led by Mrs. Ben Knapp, also participates. a special offering funds six new robes as membership grows.
Funeral services will be held Saturday afternoon at the EUB church in Reed Point for Mrs. Elizabeth Kenfield who died Monday night at a Columbus nursing home. An obituary will appear in next week's Pioneer.
Soil conservation district supervisors from seven counties gather for their annual Christmas dinner at the Legion hall this Thursday evening. About 50 to 60 delegates from Rosebud Treasure Yellowstone Big Horn Carbon Park and Sweet Grass counties will attend. The American Legion Auxiliary will serve the meal.
Lyla Westervelt of the Rocky Mountain college concert choir performed in the annual Christmas program Sunday evening at Losekamp hall. On furlough, Mr. and Mrs. Robert Yates arrived from San Antonio Wednesday afternoon and were met in Billings by Mr. and Mrs. C. C. Gray. They plan a three week furlough in Big Timber with relatives, visiting Mrs. Yates' father Paul Hoffman.
The Sheepherders beat the Harlowton Engineers 56 to 50 in Harlo, then lost to Roundup 59 to 47. Huyser Stephens Beley led scoring in the Harlo win as Big Timber built a 36 26 halftime lead. In Roundup, Beley Clark and Hauge paced the Herder rally before foul trouble and late free throws favored Roundup.
The Trio Club will host its annual Christmas party for members neighbors and guests on Saturday December 16 at 8 p m at the Dugout. Members should bring cake or cookies chairs and card tables and remember gifts for the boxes.
