Fish and Game Commissioner Al Bishop of Billings challenged the Western skew in state land buys after the Wild Horse Island purchase. He argues eastern Montana needs cottonwood habitat and public lands, cites Lion Head elk range as better, and notes political pressure and possible expansion of eastern access to public land.
Christmas programs are listed for rural and area schools. Melville School shows 7:30 p.m. and Bridge School 8 p.m. on December 21 and Greycliff McLeod School 8 p.m. on December 22. The combined high school and Hig Timber Grade School choirs perform at 8 p.m. December 15 at the high school gym. Kindergarten through jth grade present Christmas Fantasy at 2 and 8 p.m. December 19 in the grade school gym with an afternoon matinee for those unable to attend the evening show. Holidays begin after December 22. classes resume January 2.
Overland Recreation Assoc. announces a $10 reduction on annual green fees if bought by February 28 1978. The pass allows unlimited golf during the 1978 season except for tournaments and is sold by Joe Hansen at the Big Timber Building and Loan office with pricing for out of county 100 dollars own family 125 dollars single 125 dollars couple 175 dollars family 225 dollars and student 50 dollars.
Santa Claus visits Big Timber this Saturday December 17 arriving at 2 p.m. at the Fire Hall. He will stay until 3 30 p.m. and greet every child, with a gift for each visitor.
The Forest Service has installed registers atop 77 peaks in Montana and northern Idaho. The program began Aug 4 1963 with Granite Peak in Gallatin and Custer forests. The 77th register was placed Nov 12 on Big Baldy Mountain in Lewis and Clark National Forest.
Big Timber merchants report brisk shopping during the first annual special evening hours last Thursday and Friday. Stores will stay open Monday to Friday next week with carolers from the Evangelical Church and a community Christmas tree planned. closings on December 26 and January 2 mark legal holidays.
Overland Recreation Assoc board discussed strategies to cover a $30,000 January shortfall to avoid repossession of equipment and maintain credit. A spokesman noted $10,000 in loans was placed on deposit in three days after the meeting. County warrants and construction debts total about $419,000 plus $4,500 in interest, with potential reductions from an $8,100 BOR payment and a $6,000 local loan drive.
Sixty special antlerless mule and whitetail deer permits will be issued on a first come basis this Saturday at 8 a.m. Applicants must be present with a valid unused 1977 deer A tag. Permits are dated and cover three weekends in January in Hunting District 570 northeast of Melville.
The Sweet Grass County Chamber of Commerce and Biz Timber Jaycees sponsor a Christmas decorating contest to be judged from 4 to 9 p.m. during the week of December 19 through 23. Prize money is 20 dollars per category for three divisions: business, lighted home decorations, and non lighted home decorations.
Postmaster Loren Beling announces Saturday hours 9 to noon on December 17 to help with Christmas mailing and a 10 to noon package pickup on December 24. The special hours aim to convenience postal patrons.
