Serving Big Timber Montana and Sweet Grass County the town papers highlight strong performances by school boys basketball teams with a feature on the Herders and a note about bus trips for stormy weather. Meeting notices include golf course discussion and school board sessions this week.
County planner Mike Sierz outlined a Preliminary Land Use Plan for Big Timber and surrounding areas. He said the plan remains flexible, may save developers time, and aims to guide growth without current zoning limits outside the city. A colored map showed eleven land use categories and proposed uses for interchanges and streets.
The Sweet Grass County High School and Big Timber Grade School schedule two Christmas concerts. On Thursday December 15 at 8:00 p.m. in the high school gym SGHS Concert Choir Sweet Sixteen and 7th 8th grade chorus perform with a mural by Mike Wooley as a focal point. On Monday December 19 at 2:00 p.m and 8:00 p.m. in the grade school gym the kindergarten through 4th grades present Christmas Fantasy. A matinee is offered for those unable to attend evening performances. Both events are open to all with no admission charge.
Community members who ski or are interested in cross country are invited to a free film and equipment display on Thursday December 13 at 7 30 p m in the high school lunch room. Terry Madison of High Country Ski Shop Billings will present gear and host a Q A session.
City Council meeting presided by Joe Hansen approves Lois Byardal for City Treasurer and utilities clerk replacing Yonna Buechler who resigned. Mayor Oscar Stephens hospitalized after surgery. Also denied a building permit for Ed Bergquist and discussed moving garbage pickups to Saturday to reduce two day gaps.
The treasurer urges taxpayers to pay current 1977 real estate taxes by Thursday December 8 1977 at 5 pm. Mobile home owners have until December 20 1977 to pay the second half. afterward taxes become delinquent and collection actions begin.
The Chamber of Commerce invites shoppers to downtown Big Timber for the first annual Christmas shopping promotion with 6 to 8 p.m. hours on Friday and Thursday evenings. Local stores offer special prices and discounts to help reduce holiday lists. Carolers will perform in the 200 block of McLeod with groups from Junior Girl Scouts and the Evangelical Church Youth group. Hot chocolate and community spirit accompany the event as a community tree is planned with weather and road conditions noted.
The City County Planning board postponed its decision on the Preliminary Land Use Plan and plans to publish an article in The Pioneer to invite further resident comment. It also will send letters to HEW and lawmakers about hospital closure guidelines and annexation issues tied to a 1973 law. The board schedules December 27 at City Hall to decide which plan parts to approve.
At a Nov 30 special meeting the City Council unanimously accepted a bid from Bob and Myrna Mack for complete garbage collection and landfill supervision. The package covers residential and commercial collection weekdays, truck operation, 20 hours weekly landfill oversight, and landfill maintenance open to the public 2 to 6 except Wednesdays and Sundays.
Residents and businesses are urged to join the Christmas Decorating Contest sponsored by the Sweet Grass County Chamber of Commerce and the Big Timber Jaycees. Prize money is doubled with three entry categories: business, lighting of home decorations, and non lighted home decorations for energy minded owners. Judging runs Dec 19 to 23 from 4 to 9 p.m.
