Turnout For Football At Sweet Grass County High
Forty six candidates showed for football drills at Sweet Grass County High School including twelve freshmen nine sophomores fourteen juniors and eleven seniors. Returning lettermen include Gary Bainter Walt Baylis Mike Clayton Larry Hauge Rick Henthor n Ron Stutterheim and Ron Thomas. Bainter Henthorn Stutterheim Thomas and Mosness were starters last season. First week focused on conditioning and offense installation with defensive alignments added this week. Scrimmage planned for Saturday. Home opener against Manhattan, a class B school, non conference.

Thorvald Allestad, 68, longtime Sweet Grass County resident and sheep herder, died of a heart attack at Teddy Thompson’s East Fork Boulder sheep camp on Friday August 15. His body was taken to Plains for services. funeral held August 20 at First Lutheran Church in Plains. Survivors include wife Freda Larson of Plains, two sons Lars and Teddy, two daughters Florence Anderson and Elizabeth Ann Allestad, and several siblings.

Nels Strand Dies at 66 in Michigan After Four Decades of Business
Prominent Ionia area businessman Nels Strand 66 died August 16 in Grand Rapids after several months with cancer. Funeral services were held August 19 at First Presbyterian Church Ionia. Strand, born December 20 1902 in Melville Montana, built Strand Shoe Store in Ionia in 1931 and served as elder Rotary alderman and chamber volunteer. He leaves wife Margaret daughter Wilhelm Schwartz of San Francisco mother Severine Strand sisters and brothers including Sigurd and Lloyd Strand. Memorial fund for the Ionia Presbyterian building was established.

Gibby Family Celebrates 50th Wedding Anniversary
Eight Gibby children and many relatives attended the Sunday anniversary celebration for Mr. and Mrs. W. W. Gibby in the Springdale area. The couple married in Big Timber on August 20, 1919, and have six daughters, two sons, 29 grandchildren, and six great grandchildren. Out-of-town guests included W. E. Brown of Victor.

Forest lands near Gallatin closed to fires and smoking
Under Regulation T-1 sections E and H the Gallatin National Forest lands are declared closed to building fires and smoking except at designated campsites or habitation areas due to hazardous fire conditions. The prohibition takes effect August 28 at 8:00 a.m. and remains until rescinded by a forest officer.

Sue Barns took home the trophy from Sweet Grass Dairy for the best dairy animal. Grand Champion Columbia Ram and Grand Champion Columbia Eve were awarded purple ribbons to Charlotte Weinfurter. Herdsmanship buckle went to Steve Orestad for cleanliness and neatness. Round Robin Showmanship crowned top youth winners, with senior and junior divisions listing names and cash prizes.

The Woodhouse champion steer sold for 60 dollars per cwt to Frye's Cafe, totaling 609. Brewer Trucking took Ann Bryce's reserve hog for 48.25 per cwt or 451.09. Terry Hotchkiss's champion hog went to Big Timber Clinic and Connerton Construction for 71.50 per cwt or 171.60. Ken Laubach's reserve hog sold for 52 per cwt. The sale ran Saturday night with auctioneers Paul Westervelt and volunteers arranging clerking, netting over 15 thousand dollars in value. The Big Timber Jaycees sponsor the event, with prices listed on page three. Fat livestock brought in 14,473.33 in total sales including 11 steers, 11 hogs, and 42 lambs. Breeding stock brought 758. Emil Drivdah paid 105 for Hampshire ram lamb. David Bjorndal 87.50. Bjarne Bjorndal 85.00.

Principal Vance Ramburg reported an early tally of 213 students for the 69-70 Sweet Grass High School year, down eight from 221 in 68-69. The distribution across Freshman 52, Sophomores 56, Juniors 51, Seniors 54 shows stable class sizes with two out of state students Kent Ransing of Palm Beach Florida and Roger Reinbold of Aurora West Virginia, plus two out of town Freshmen Ron Henry Laurel and Julie Etzold Libby.

Harvest Progress in 1969 Winter Wheat and Hay Crops
The 1969 winter wheat harvest is 80 percent complete with rapid progress in the southeast. Barley combining lags about a week but yields and quality are good. Oat harvest is half done, alfalfa second cut 60 percent stacked. Hail damage is light overall. Topsoil remains very dry with scarce moisture, range grasses are brittle, and irrigation water is becoming scarce in many areas.
