Bill Fraser argues Sweet Grass county residents should pay fair prices for 4-H beef and livestock to help youth profit from their work. He outlines costs for a calf feeding nine months, expected sale price, and the idea of paying youth $25 per hour to encourage continued involvement in 4-H.
Julius C. DeCock died aged 46 with funeral rites at Perkins Chapel led by Rev. Fr. O'Dea. Burial followed at Catholic Cemetery, Harlowton. Rosary by John Cavan. Pallbearers: Theodore Frank Joseph Leo Cornelius and Henry De Cock. Survived by wife Inez Birch, daughter Doris, two infant siblings, and three stepchildren Philip Birch Mildred Stewart.
Due to the 4H and FFA fair, football uniforms will be issued Saturday afternoon August 24 between 3 and 5 o'clock instead of 3 o'clock. Practice starts Monday August 26 with two sessions daily at 9 30 a m and 7 p m. Incoming freshmen who have not received their plays should contact Coach Jim Graham.
Mrs. Martha Rose Lambert age 69 of Vancouver B C died at Community hospital from injuries in a one car crash a mile west of Big Timber on highway 10 Monday. Husband Joseph Lambert injured. nephew Camille Rossignol and daughter Mrs Arturo Goucher uninjured. Cause preliminarily blamed on a wheel blowout. car overturned in a barrow pit. Body to New Westminster for funeral services.
Robert C. Guthrie, head of the Naval Research Laboratory radar division in Washington, D C., visited a Reed Point family reunion and reflected on radar origins. He credited others for key advances, noted radar’s wartime drive, and addressed peacetime uses amid public confusion.
Twenty girls from Sweet Grass county sent 26 clothing exhibits to the Midland Empire fair and won nine blue, twelve red and five white ribbons. Linda Warp won a red for a complete wool suit. Florence Yost earned blue for a wool skirt and blouse. Numerous girls earned ribbons for washable skirts, blouses, cot ton dresses, head scarves, a slip, and an apron, with a keen competition and strong showing.
The 1957 Youth Electric Fair in Livingston saw Sidney Helvik John Stone and Ronald Faw sweep the welding section for first second and third with prizes of 25 12.50 and 7.50. Monte Jarrett Alex Adams Linda Warp Russell Ewan Gloria Bee Ellen Broughton and others won ribbons for demonstrations lamp work and gadget projects. First place winners advance to the state fair October 15.
The Cayuse Hills 4-H Club held its second annual fair on August 13 at the Henry Berg ranch. Thirteen members demonstrated in the morning. livestock, foods, and clothing were judged in the afternoon after a potluck dinner. Judges were John Miller and Miss Louise Guild. County Agent F B Peterson awarded ribbons.
Richard Nicholson, son of Mrs Helen Nicholson formerly of Big Timber and a third year medical student at the University of Washington medical school, spends the summer researching ovarian tissue. He is a Sweet Grass county high school graduate.
The Jaycees face the Lions in a Big Timber Softball League title game with a 2-0 and 2-1 tournament record respectively. A Jaycees win ends the double elimination season. a Lions victory forces a deciding Monday matchup for the Huidekoper trophy. A free will collection will fund league bats and balls.
The county transportation committee approved a new bus route from Big Timber to the eight mile bridge on the old McLeod road and modified the Boulder route for the high school. They also finalized the Glasston Otter creek route and sanctioned the Grey Cliff Howie junction route which had prior approval. F D MacDonald was appointed as second elementary trustee to serve until August 1959 joining a six member committee including Mrs Deegan Webber Collins Jr Prather and Grosfield.
Mrs Albert Strand left yesterday for Canby Oregon to visit relatives. She traveled with her son Ommund Strand and Mrs Strand and two Helena relatives on a trip to Seaside Oregon.
The Citizens Bank lists fall delivery contracts for cattle across districts including Galen Dupuyer Boulder White Sulphur Springs Lennep Plains and Plains deliveries from Sept. Oct and-Nov. Prices range from 20c to 30c per pound for Hereford and Angus calves and yearlings with varying shrink percentages and trucking distances.

Harold T. Murray, 30, of Livingston, died in Deaconess hospital Billings from a crushed skull after a Sunday motorcycle crash on Highway 89 five miles south of Livingston. He was a beginner rider who had ridden the cycle only twice before the accident on Paradise valley. Murray was born October 7, 1926, in Big Timber and lived in Springdale and Livingston before his death.
The high school will begin Tuesday September 3 with an opening assembly at 1 30 pm. Registration and fee deposits for freshmen through seniors occur August 29 and 30 with specific morning or afternoon slots. Buses start regular service Wednesday and staff includes Principal A R Collins and a full teaching lineup.
A Saturday hailstorm hit Swamp and Big Timber creeks with two inch stones denting vehicles. Farms suffered heavy crop and range damage per Frank Stewart of Kiewit Cattle Co. Wind and flood brief in Tin Can Hill area. Gibson County spared. Court house gauge read .97 inches. Bruffey ranch recorded 2 ½ inches.
Richard Nicholson of Parkland, a UW medical student, conducts summer research on how hormones affect ovarian tissue using electron microscopy. His work, supervised by Dr. Richard J. Blandau, explores ovarian cycles and pituitary hormone interactions and is funded by an anatomy fellowship.
Dale Haar son of Mr and Mrs Lars Haar of Twedot attends Boys State at Dill on with Belgrade high school representation. He stays with his aunt Mrs Phil Langston during the term. Also visiting is Mrs LaVern Duncan of Lewiston with her mother Mrs Louis Beley and relatives. her daughter Mrs William Greer of Muncie Indiana is a guest at the Beley home.
Montana Boys State opens in Dillon with 340 delegates, including Earl Bouse John Drivdahl John Green and Maier Miller. Delegates, all high school juniors, begin campaigning elections and government operations as slates of officers are chosen with funding from the American Legion and local service groups.
Weather and higher lower grade barley production prompt the USDA to broaden 1957 crop price support eligibility. Kenneth Roe of Sweet Grass county discusses inclusion of grade No 5 barley with discounts and test weight as low as 36 pounds per bushel in loan rate determinations.
