Goats Restocked in Pine Creek Area South of Livingston
Montana Fish and Game released ten Rocky Mountain goats into Pine Creek south of Livingston to bolster a herd of five last year. Since 1942 the department has released goats in the Livingston to Red Lodge region, with prior releases in Red Lodge East Rosebud and Stillwater canyons, aiming to create a major Montana goat habitat.

The bride wore a satin lace gown with fingertip veil and carried a pink and white bouquet atop a white Bible. Mrs Harry McCrorey, the groom’s sister, served as matron of honor.

Livingston Man Wins Trout Derby Prize
Livingston resident Hank Fabian won first prize of 1000 dollars in the 1957 National Freshwater Trout Derby at Livingston. He landed a four pound four and a half ounce Loch Leven at 11 30 am on the north side of the Yellowstone River below the highway bridge at Mission. Fabian checked the trout in at derby headquarters in Miles Park at 12 30 pm. Second prize went to LeRoy Norville of Billings for a two pound 14 ounce Loch Leven caught with worms at 12 30 pm, checked in after 1 pm. Third prize of 150 dollars went to George Hert of Billings for a two pound 12 1 2 ounce Rainbow. Mrs Barbara Domer of Townsend was the women’s champion with a two pound eight ounce Loch Leven caught at 9 20 am and checked in at 12 45 pm. The derby drew about 1 800 entries with hundreds of spectators. Joe Brooks was named lifetime honorary president of Livingston’s Trout Derby association.

Walter Wagner came home this week for a 30 day leave from Venezuela where he has worked a seismograph crew for the past year. He plans a 12 month return hitch after his rest. He notes Venezuela's rainy season halting field work for six months and limited off hours recreation in back country. He sees great economic potential from oil coal and iron deposits though roads are sparse and air service is good. The Venezuelan president is pushing highway and rail improvements.

Moose and Lions Battle In Double Elimination Softball Tourney
The Moose club started with a 14 7 loss to the Lions and then won a 30 29 thriller to force a tie for fourth. A coin flip gave Moose the right to face the Jaycees in Tuesday’s game, which the Jaycees won 32 17. Lions beat Firemen 19 17 on Wednesday. Next Monday the Jaycees and Lions meet while Firemen and Moose duel tonight in a loser’s bracket match. The tournament remains double elimination with potential final games on Thursday or Friday depending on defeats.

Big Timber Native Miss Mirrielees Dies in California
Lucia Mirrielees, sister of Stanford English professor Edith Mirrielees, died at Palo Alto hospital on August 4 from a cerebral hemorrhage at age 71. Born in Big Timber Montana, she taught at the University of Montana before retiring to Stanford with her sister. Private services were held August 6 in Palo Alto, with burial at Cypress Lawn in Colma.

The 21st annual Sweet Grass county 4 H FFA and FHA fair will run Friday and Saturday August 23 24 at the fair grounds. Big Timber Visitor Highlights Montana Children's Homes Network
Rev A Kohalay represented the Montana Children's Home and Hospital and Shodair Crippled Children’s Hospital as a Big Timber visitor and Lions guest. The home, incorporated in 1897, operates statewide, non sectarian and interdenominationally to aid about 750 children yearly with homes for the homeless, boarding care, and hospital treatment for crippled and handicapped children. It relies on voluntary contributions and employs trained staff with a thirteen member unpaid Board of Trustees, serving all children in need regardless of race or creed.

Montana Power seeks first rate hike in 45 years
Montana Power Co. asked the Montana Public Service Commission for a general electric rate increase covering residential commercial and industrial customers plus housing authorities and street lighting. The typical residential rise would be about 414 cents per day for 300 kWh monthly use with higher bills for 50 to 1 200 kWh brackets. Company president J E Corrette cited rising expenses and a decline in revenue per kWh noting costs for materials and payroll have surged while taxes have grown from 4.8 million in 1946 to over 12 million now.
