Buck Cheney of Belgrade won $413 at the 18th Melville rodeo taking calf roping and teaming with Hup Davis of Bozeman. Hap Davis was second and Bob Fitzgerald third as 100 plus amateurs competed, with high payouts in team roping and other events.
Agnes Beckman daughter of Mr and Mrs Edward Beckman of Three Forks married Quincy J Huyser son of Mr and Mrs Q C Huyser Sunday August 15 at Castle Rock Tabernacle near Gallatin Gateway Rev Glen E Clark officiated. Attendants included Olive Ruth Huyser and Delores Beckman with Martin Beckman best man. The couple planned a western Montana Washington wedding trip and will reside on the groom's ranch north of Big Timber.
Leo Cremer of Big Timber Montana, famed rodeo producer, announced he will move to Colorado Springs. He bought a Broadmoor home site near Penrose Stadium while keeping his Montana holdings and continuing oversight of the annual Colorado Springs rodeo.
Helena Aug 17 Stillwater county reported to the state health board Montana s third case of Rocky mountain spotted fever the year the total still under five cases to date in 1947 week ending Aug 14 showed polio up and several diseases rising while syphilis and tuberculosis also increased in the period
Aug 16 reports from the United Lutheran Church of America show 13 new members per Montana congregation last year, with 11,144 total new members nationwide bringing the church’s tally to 1,880,628. Rev. F. Eppling Reinartz, church secretary, released figures.
From Billings Mrs. Arthur Nelson and Mrs. Anna Hermanson visited here with friends over the weekend. Art Sell and Clifton Bryan began a hitchhiking vacation to see Clifton's brother Robert Bryan in Phoenix and to tour California, reaching Salt Lake City on the first day. Ropin n Ridin club members urged to work at the fair grounds each evening to prepare the track.
Helena report shows eleven Montana schools of nursing still accept applications for fall classes starting September. Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Mahan arrived from Ft. Riley for a two week visit with his mother in Helena and her parents, Mr. and Mrs. O. E. Smart.
The next Boy Scout paper drive is scheduled for Monday at 6 30 PM. Out of town residents should leave paper at Mc Intyre Motor Sales or Oie Motor Co. prior to that time. Scouts received a $56 check for the last shipment.
Letters will go out to Sweet Grass county youths inviting them to join the Big Timber Junior Chamber of Commerce as it reorganizes next Tuesday at 8 pm at the Big Timber cafe. The group has funded and led civic projects including a pool revival, a county marble tournament, Boys State participation, and over $300 in donations to community improvements.
Inquiries pour in from Butte Townsend Missoula Roundup and Billings with one from Texas as the Ropin n Ridin club prepares a Sunday event at the fairgrounds. The track gains a new inside fence and grounds are being prepared. Several races including one eighth mile two open quarters and two open halves plus a ladies and kids race and jackpot roping are planned with 50 percent of gate and entry fees added to purses. A saddle from Bailey Hardware will be awarded. show slated for 1 PM.
Berent Allestad and Howard Johnson, both Plains natives, completed a 1200 mile horseback trek to Elko Nevada and back. They started June 12 from Plains, traveled via Pierce Grangeville Boise and Elko reaching the return route through Wells Twin Falls West Yellowstone and Livingston Gardiner to Big Timber. They endured water scarce desert stretches and drank from stagnant potholes at times. Berent is a former Big Timberite.
Mrs. Herbert Spotts was admitted to Community hospital this morning for medical treatment. In town, Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Zeleny and their two children from Spokane are visiting their parents Mr. and Mrs. Anton Zeleny and Mr. and Mrs. Norman Hale.
Funeral services were held Friday at Reed Point Evangelical United Brethren church for Rev. H. S. Tool who died August 8 of a heart attack. The large Montana turnout filled the church and a loudspeaker served those outside. Interment followed at Reed Point cemetery. Tool, known as the Bard of the Yellowstone for his poetry and radio program, served Montana churches for almost 50 years and left a memorial fund of 227.50 from valley communities and state friends.
A marriage license was issued Saturday by Clerk of Court Beulah Patterson to John Leo Jensen and Mary Nutting, both of Columbus. They were married that day by Rev. E. B. E. Tollefson, with Mrs. Sera Ross and Harold K. Garton as attendants.
Berlin reports the Neue Zeitung, the American military government’s German language paper, claims 1500 Sachsenhausen inmates died under Soviet control. It says graves were hidden in a nearby forest and attempts to erase signs of the sites were thwarted.
Floyd county officials moved to ban comic book sales and ordered psychiatric tests for three boys accused of torturing a fourth. The seven year old victim testified in circuit court about ropes causing welts on his neck and wrists. doctors said he narrowly escaped death by hanging.
A crow shot in Montana bore a leg tag from a Utah banding program. Arthur E. Clyde of Hamilton found the tag, indicating the bird was released near Springville, Utah on February 2 as part of a pest control project and turned the tag over to Montana fish and game.
In New York on August 18 wholesale butter prices fell for the third straight day, lowering the weekly decline to about 5 percent per pound.
The 10,000 acre Goat Mountain ranch once part of Walter J. Hill estate near Wilsall is for sale to settle Hill’s estate. Walt Davis of Bozeman announced the listing. The ranch traces to a 1919 purchase by Hill and Robert P. McClelland and has since been reduced in size. Clarence G. Keough serves as foreman. The unstocked property is largely leased for pasture.
Mr and Mrs Jim Hess of Pueblo Colorado visit Mrs Hess parents Mr and Mrs Clark McKenzie and grandparents Mr and Mrs W D McKenzie. They attend Boys State at Dillon from Sweet Grass county.
