Rev H S Tool longtime pastor of the Big Timber Evangelical United Brethren church died at 6 15 PM Sunday after a stroke suffered earlier at 10 45 AM at the Reed Point church. He fainted near the basement stairs but regained briefly before failing to recover. Funeral services are set for Friday at 2 PM from the Reed Point church with burial in Reed Point cemetery.

Rudolph Egeland, a machinist from the Northern Pacific shops, becomes the first two time winner of Livingston’s National Trout Derby with a two pounds 12 ounce Loch Leven trout that earned $1,000. The fish was the smallest winner yet, and was initially left on the ground before being tagged and recovered. Gene Hansen, age 7, was noted as the derby’s youngest entrant, while Guy Ossello of Butte won the top prize in a later moment. The event drew about 1,900 to 2,200 fishermen along the Yellowstone River from Pine Creek to Carter’s bridge, amid traffic jams and a long list of notable entries and close finishes.
Funeral services for 82 year old George Allen were held at the Lowry chapel with Rev. F Everal Wines officiating. He had suffered a long illness and prior health decline after a stroke. Survived by widow three daughters one son six grandchildren and four great grandchildren. Burial at Mountain View. Born April 12 1866 in Putman county Missouri came to Montana in 1912 lived near Shawmut Bridger Creek before moving to Big Timber in 1946.
Patsy Lovely of Livingston was admitted to Lott hospital with a broken shoulder and injuries from a three miles east of Springdale auto crash. Lenix Badger county extension agent was treated for facial cuts and released. The Idaho driver Harold Labelle and his wife caused the collision that sent the car into a ditch.
George Willman known as Skyline Bill drew color to Big Timber’s celebration two weeks ago. He rode in the prize winning McCormick stage coach and was famous for his animal shows since 1913. His acts include trained dogs and other animals, based out of Austin near Helena.
Frank Chase Jr. 24 died after an emergency appendix operation at Ft Harrison Veterans hospital. Funeral at Big Timber Lutheran church with military graveside rites by Sweet Grass post 19. Survivor details include parents four sisters and three brothers. Born January 20 1924 in Big Timber he served in France Belgium Germany and later studied at Eastern Montana Normal and Colorado College.
Mr. and Mrs. Labelle escaped with minor injuries after their car was demolished in a crash. Labelle told patrolmen the wheels locked causing him to swerve, with Badger almost stopping before impact. Extensive damage reported to Badger’s car as well.
The 18th Melville Amateur Rodeo is scheduled for Sunday with events including bronc and bareback riding, team roping, calf roping, and wild cow milking. Over $600 in prize money, noon entry close, show at 2 pm, lunch on grounds, draws hundreds from Montana. The event has helped launch future professional rodeo stars such as Bull Linderman Dick Herron and Red McDowell.
Swimming pool work nights have been resumed with August Pullman to lay out daytime tasks. Volunteers from Moose Lodge Lions Club Jaycees American Legion and Knights of Pythias are invited to help on their designated nights. others may join any night.
Approval for G I flight training at the local airport came last Thursday after inspection by the state aeronautical commission. Dale H. Fern conducted the inspection in the new Stinson plane. Walt Huffman of Big Timber Flying Service negotiated a Veterans Administration contract for private and commercial pilots and flight instructors courses. The government will cover all costs including insurance. only the qualification physical remains paid by the veteran. Private courses cost less than a year of G I eligibility. commercial and instructor courses vary by hours and aircraft horsepower.
The couple Mr. and Mrs. Jack Halverson welcomed a 7 pound son named Jack Daniel born August 7 at Park Hospital in Livingston. Mother is former Mabel Kratzer.
Harold Boe announces sale of his store to Vaughn Ragsdale, with continued involvement. The Big Timber shop will be expanded, adding yard goods and domestic departments, plus broader men’s, women’s and children's apparel and footwear. George Ward named manager, with a history in several Vaughn Ragsdale stores.
Breeders from Montana Wyoming and the Dakotas received entry blanks for Billings Northern Quarter Horse Show at Midland Empire fairgrounds August 28 29. The event by the Northern Quarter Horse Breeders Association features 17 halter classes 3 performance classes 4 races and a supreme working quarter horse with a $500 purse based on a three calf average. Exhibitors must rope a calf cut out a steer and run a stake race with entries due by August 20.
