Local workers debate whether to take turns sitting on unusual white snake eggs found near Arneson ranch. Hans Larson uncovered several two inch eggs at the county gravel pit. breaking one revealed a live snake inside, leaving the species undecided and the hatchery monitoring developments.
Principal Gilman Aller confirms all teachers for next year. Mervin Wertz of Nebraska fills English, Helen Lyons of Glendive handles commercial, and Zelma Frazier of Hardin teaches home economics. School begins September 7 with forenoon registration. extra registration on September 3 and 4 from 9 a.m. to p.m. The principal will be at the high school both days. freshmen and parents are urged to discuss subjects and four-year plans.
Fourteen members of Girl Scout Troop III and leaders Mrs. Clarence Loftsgaarden Mrs. Wallace Mc Arthur and Mrs. Clarence Erickson spent August 16 to 21 camping in Big Timber canyon. They set up tents cooked meals daily and took part in hikes and campfire programs while observing wildlife.
The local selective service board is appointed by Governor Ford with H Ben Tetlie A E Vanderhoef and W K Amery as members and Mrs Harry Coster as secretary. Office hours are 830 to 1130 a m and 1 to 6 p m in the former county attorney's office second floor courthouse. Registration spans August 30 to September 18 by birth year 1922 to 1930 with five day rule after turning 18 and registrants 18 through 25 urged to bring discharge papers.
Mrs. Fannie Bade longtime Big Timber resident died at her Bozeman home Saturday from a heart attack at age 81. Funeral held Wednesday at Big Timber Lutheran Church with Rev E E Tollefson officiating. Burial at Mountain View. Survived by sons Harry Bozeman Carl Butte Louis Salem Ore and daughter Inez McDonald California.
The Sweet Grass county Republican central committee was organized at a meeting last Thursday afternoon with R. A. The interior department set aside 327 089 for Montana to use as federal aid for wildlife conservation before July 1 1949. Nationwide total 10 780 620, the largest such appropriation. Robert M Rutherford said the funds will help states expand wildlife development beyond previous efforts.
County Assessor Roy S. Webber reports the largest rise in tax income comes from the county high school fund, rising to 62686 from 37565 due to an additional levy. Other funds show modest gains with total county taxes at 133005 and total school taxes at 146210, up from 127193 and 109880 respectively. The city of Big Timber will raise 20285 this year, up from 18906.
Yellowstone National Park may post its first million tourist year, as of Aug 23 total visitors reached 830,602 since Oct 1. An 7.5 percent rise from the 1947 date. last year drew 932,000 visitors. Lodges and hotels close dates are listed with Mammoth remains open to Sept 26 and Fishing Bridge operations to Sept 30. Weather will determine open days into October or November with fishing season closing Oct 15.
Washington reports that unless President Truman changes policy, men who marry before registering for the draft are deferred. The Selective Service official said many inquiries seek a marriage deadline. The policy reads that a registrant with a wife or child and a bona fide residence is placed in class 3 A.
A Soviet Moldavia writer urged managers to craft signs more carefully after a citizen sought a medical certificate for a “normal neck.” A kerosene store kept a sign stating kerosene won’t be sold to citizens with narrow necks, misread as meaning people.
Funeral services for Mrs. Oisten Bue 59 who died Friday afternoon of a cerebral hemorrhage were held Tuesday at the Big Timber Lutheran Church. Rev E E Tollefson officiated with organ music by Mrs. Ted C Busha and E O Overland. Pallbearers included Herbert Boe Alfred Ostrum Louis Krone Joe Bare Fred Swift Carl Mysse Thomval Krone and Harold Boe. Interment was in Mountain View. Mrs Freda Helvik Bue born in Norway in 189? and married Oisten Bue March 4, 1925, on a Reed Point ranch. Surviving are husband two sons Clarence and Jakie Reed Point a daughter Mrs Cecil Earp Spokane sister Mrs John Boe two brothers Julian Helvik Big Timber Armand Helvik Norway and one grandson Michael Lee Earp.
The VA advises veterans who reinstated National Service Life Insurance before the July 31 deadline to make an additional monthly premium immediately to avoid another lapse. Many paid only the two required premiums covering the grace period and reinstatement month. Premiums may be paid monthly, quarterly, semi annual, or annually with discounts for advance payment.
Chicago report cites 1948 Accident Facts showing one in five fatal drivers in 1947 had been drinking. Even light drinking raises crash risk three to four times, heavy drinking raises it fifty fivefold. Also one in four adult pedestrians killed in traffic last year had been drinking.

Senator McCue owned by George Morey ridden by Jim Bostead won the 330 yard match race in 19.4 seconds over Baby Star with Jitterbug Roberts. The same horse won the 1/4 mile open race at 25.9 seconds and led a field including Dutch and Silly. A second win came in the 1/4 mile open with Dutch second and Silly third. Other winners include Candy in the eighth mile and Copper Chief in the ladies race. Legends include Madill horses failing to repeat California form and Lee Smoot taking the green colt Candy.
Superintendent A C McDonald announces all grade school teachers except music are signed. New hires include Clarise Oppegard third grade, Mary Walch fourth grade, Merle Evans fifth, Vivian Kuypers upper grades. Returning staff include Mildred Schruhl Kathryn Douglas and Herbert Wallum. Mrs Signy Deeney leads the opportunity room. First faculty meeting set for Sept 6 at 10 am.
Bozeman Montana E P Orcutt extension livestock specialist at Montana State college urged sheepmen not to market good whitefaced ewe lambs as replacements are badly needed in Montana flocks. He cited the smallest lamb crop on record and a 40 percent drop in ewe numbers over seven years. Marketing starts in about two weeks and early dropped mountain lambs may be slaughter fat. Write Orcutt for help in grading or culling lambs.
Tour party led by Mr and Mrs Stanley Hanson with daughters Beverly and Rita of Melville toured Yellowstone Park at the start of the week noting scenic sights during their sightseeing trip through the national park.
The government imposes new credit restrictions effective Sept. 20 covering consumer installment purchases from $50 to $5,000. A third down payment on autos and 20 percent down on most appliances applies, with 15 month limits on small plans and 18 months on larger buys. Penalties include up to 10 years in prison or $10,000 fines. Exemptions include medical, education, real estate, and stock loans.
