Forest Ranger Alban Roemer praised the Pioneer's classified section after reporting a stray horse found its way back to its pasture two hours after the paper reached streets. The ad’s effectiveness was highlighted by several readers who had houses rented and items sold through the section.
A. B. Riley, trainmaster for the Yellowstone division, visited The Pioneer stating Postmaster McLauchlan blamed excessive speed for breaks that occur when a fast train is late and making up time. No mail mishap has occurred in months.
Teresa Drivdahl reports from Camp Mini Vanca Michigan about two weeks at the 4 H camp. She describes a four square focus on mental social physical and religious growth with girls from Wisconsin Missouri Alabama Kentucky and the Dominican Republic. Activities include sailing swimming canoeing badminton tennis and church services in a hilltop log church for 750 campers and 100 faculty visitors.
The Ropin n Ridin club hosts the Montana championship for the ladies cloverleaf barrel race on August 27 28 with entries from across the state. Ruth Owens of Geraldine is the defending champion and is expected to return. Prizes include pedestal trophies and belt buckles for top four with buckles for second and third, donated by local businesses. The program features a Sweet Grass county boys steer riding contest, a championship cutting horse show with top horses from Montana Wyoming and North Dakota, a six calf averages roping contest, and a reg quarter horse filly giveaway. Funeral services for George La mont Fessenden 69 who died at Warm Springs State Hospital followed illness of over two years were held at Lowry Funeral Home with Rev E Brentwood Barker officiating. Military rites at Mountain View cemetery included firing squad and color guard. Fessenden born August 17 1886 in Lime Springs Iowa lived in Edgehill Montana from 1912 and served in World War I. Survivors include two brothers and five sisters with several nieces and nephews.
The spruce budworm infestation in Sweet Grass Canyon and surrounding regions threatens forests. Mrs. Bud Ward notes millions of moths and heavy damage while officials report past spraying of 140,000 acres and plan broader treatment if funds allow. The lifecycle spans May to July with eggs laid on conifers and larvae feeding through late spring and summer.
Billings and Laurel deaths mark the first polio cases in Yellowstone county for 1955. Bourgeois brothers Billings Darold 14 and Wallace 15 died from bulbar polio after moving from Merrifield Minnesota to Laurel and Livingston. Eight year old Robert Patterson, Salk-vaccinated, was discharged from a Billings hospital and is reported doing fine.
The Firemen defeated the Lions 16 to 9 to win the opening playoff game. The Moose face the Legion in tonight’s second game while Lions await the night’s loser. If the Firemen win, they advance to play the night’s winner Tuesday.
Mayor Roe said the city water turned brown after intake repairs began. Rotten timbers were found and replaced by Ben Strickland who leads the project. No further trouble expected.
Chester A. Bickford, 69, of Shepherd and longtime Sawyer store manager, died Friday in a Billings hospital after a heart attack. Born January 28, 1886 in Excelsior Minnesota, he moved from Minnesota to Big Timber in 1926 to manage the Sawyer store, later ran a Shepherd store with the post office. He leaves wife Helen Louise Jorgensen, three sons Robert W. Bickford of Butte James E. Bickford of Springdale and Donald A. Bickford of Laurel, a sister Helen MacKenzie of Fargo and six grandchildren. Funeral services were held in Billings and burial was in Sunset Memorial Gardens.
From Missoula, Mrs. Cora Yaggy of Missoula visits Mrs. Inez Jarrett. Her grandson Billy Yaggy also joins, visiting with many cousins in town.
Eight 4 H members from Sweet Grass county exhibited at the Billings fair placing in blue and red ribbon events. Janet Fraser-Breeding won blue in heifer. Dixie Warp wore blue in several garments. Margot Sotmers earned blue for cotton skirt and head scarf. Nomee Sue Smith presented a red ribbon dress with accessories. Linda Warp, Ellen Broughton, Gloria Bee, and Dee Von Miller also earned blue ribbons in washable school dresses, head scarves, and related outfits or special foods and party dress items.
Four local boys George Bray Emil Drivdahl Franklin Grosfield and Larry Esp will join 326 peers for the ninth annual Boys State at Dillon starting Sunday. The Montana American Legion program offers leadership training citizenship study and an athletic slate over a nine day course. Alternates Benny Green Curtis Jacobson Ken Mlekush and Douglas Mothershead were named.
Congressman Orvin B. Fiare prepares a local office in Big Timber to operate from the house garage once equipment arrives. Executive secretary Waldo Spangelo and family are in town and will reside at Park Motel. Spangelos have son James aged 41. Fiare attends Rosebud county fair Forsyth and plans appearances in Billings, Red Lodge, and Boys State events with several engagements this week.
Reed Point schools will open on Tuesday September 6 according to Superintendent George L. Alton. Teaching staff includes Mrs Doris Berg Billings grades 1 through 4 Mrs Rex Guthrie Columbus home economics and commerce Mrs Clarence Ostenson Columbus science and English Superintendent Alton social science and mathematics with a vacancy in the upper grades and industrial arts department Illa Ostenson Reed Point will run the lunch program and James Baxter is the custodian.
Sweet Grass county selects Dee Von Miller Nomee Sue Smith Margaret Anderson Sharon Faw Ellis Faw Maier Miller for 4-H Club Congress at Bozeman August 22 to 26. County Agent F B Peterson notes they will be accompanied by 4-H leader Mrs Nellie Smith.
Kenneth Moore landed a seven pound plus loch Sunday while fishing the Yellowstone with sucker meat. The 29 inch fish stands as the area’s largest reported this year.
A search began Friday for Mrs. Louis Stahl who left Clydehurst without notice. The bloodhound, owned by the sheriffs association, led responders to her near Crystal Spring ranch where she was found walking back.
Howard Place, previously regional administrator for the Lutheran Hospital and Homes Society based in Big Timber, has been named administrator of Sheyenne Memorial Hospital for the Chronically Ill in Valley City North Carolina. He leaves tomorrow to arrange housing for his four children and wife.
R Halverson of the Jaycees tops batting with a .687. Close lists include Long and McCauley of Moose, Johnson of Lions, Jacobs of Firemen, and Olness figures across Legion Jaycees and other squads.
Edwin W Holmberg, a native of Glendive and graduate of Montana State College, was named to the high school math position. He has eight years of teaching experience including two years in Minnesota and six in Montana, most recently at Sheridan. Holmberg was in town Saturday to view housing and rented the Nicholson house. he has three children.
Mrs Mary McKenzie local draft board secretary announces that no men will be inducted or undergo pre induction physicals during September.
Mr and Mrs Tom Prather die in an auto wreck near Mount Mine above Absarokee early Saturday. Mrs Prather Instant in death. Tom dies in hospital. Passenger Mrs Russell Carlson unhurt. Inquest possible. both were longtime residents with ties to Big Timber and Mount.
More than 60 people attended the outdoor worship at Camp Mimanagish Sunday for the Congregational church built cabin dedication. Dr. George E. Stickney preached, Rev. Walter Spencer offered the prayer, and Mr. Barker led the service beside the 26 by 38 foot log cabin with a native stone fireplace memorial to Floyd Bailey.
John E. Willford and Kenneth F. Smith were taken into custody by sheriff's officers yesterday and are in the county jail. Willford faces a fraudulent check charge for cashed checks at the A. W. Miles Co. and Hager Motor Sales. Smith is held for operating a motor vehicle with improper California license plates. Ownership of several items found in the car is undetermined. Two minors, a 14-year-old boy and an 11-year-old girl, were turned over to Billings juvenile authorities.
Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Cosgriff of Harlowton were in town Tuesday for the Prather funeral services.
Montana Fish and Game Commission announced upland bird seasons and bag limits across the state. Mountain grouse open Sept 18 to Oct 2 in 28 western counties, with a two or three bird daily limit by area. Prairie grouse have five eastern seasons with varied dates and limits.
