Ben Olness and his wife, while on a dental call, applied splints to a buck deer's hind leg found near the river. Six men held the animal as Mrs. Olness settled the splints with flashlight light. The cause of the break remained unknown, with possible injury from a log or brush along the Boulder.
Newcomers to Big Timber learn of the community co op cannery past Bieber Feed & Grain where canning is simple. Open Tuesdays and Fridays 1 to 5 pm with a two cent extra charge for non members, the facility originated in 1944 under Ralph Kneeland and Scott Hoskinson and has evolved through moves and incorporation with support from the Farm Bureau and Lions Club.
Winners crowned in roping and cutting events held Sunday at the fairgrounds under the Big Timber Ropin n Ridin club. Calf roping first go round Hup Davis Bozeman. second Sonny Bohleen Livingston. third Lawrence Chapel Big Timber. Second go round Hap Davis first Bohleen second McComb Big Timber. Cutting averages led by Carol Buchli Big Timber first Al Buchli Big Timber second H S Stevenson Bozeman third. Al Buchli impressed with a cut on King Trumpet without a bridle. First cutting contest held in Big Timber under National Cutting Horse Association rules. Ormin Johnson won greased pig. Richard Bare Reed Point second.
Sister visiting Mrs. F. F. Fowler arrived yesterday from Missoula for a visit with her brother Louis Solberg from Mound Minnesota and his wife and family Mr. and Mrs. Selmer Solberg.
Fourteen members of Scout Troop 21 ended a weeklong camping trip near Independence and Four Mile ranger station in Boulder County. The trip featured gold panning, hiking, and a 20 mile hike to Silverlake, with supervision by several leaders and support from local volunteers and equipment providers.
Miss Charlotte Thompson wed William C Magelssen in Billings on Saturday in a ceremony officiated by Rev. Caton. The bride wore a white marquisette gown with lace collar and a silver sixpence in her shoe. Guests included 150 relatives and friends. the couple plans to reside in Livingston after a Yellowstone trip. The bride is a Montana State alumna and Delta Delta Delta member. the groom is a Montana State Agricultural College graduate.
Four junior high students depart Dillon for the American Legion sponsored Boys State a ten day democracy school. Attendees include Jack Armstrong from American Legion Joe Roemer Lions Club Bill Hoskinson Moose delegate and Teddy Clark Masonic Lodge sponsor. Over 335 boys attend with mock government politics sports and entertainment. A Virginia City excursion is planned as a Beaverhead Chamber of Commerce guest event and the program ends with a governor ball on August 21 and awards on August 22.
A September Holiday magazine story by A. B. Guthrie Jr. portrays Montana as The Treasure State preserving frontier traditions. The 19 page piece, illustrated with 40 plus photographs, surveys Glacier National Park, mining history of Daly Andrews Clark and Heinze, private enterprise, rugged humor, and vast plains east of the divide.
Visiting daughter Mrs. Richard Hauge is spending the day in Mossmain to visit her daughter Mrs. Ole Euland. She rode down with Mrs. Grace Williams who is in Billings today on business.
A large gathering for all business and professional men of Big Timber is set for tonight at 7:30 in the courthouse courtroom. The subject concerns the town, and every interested person is urged to attend to learn the details.
Funeral services were conducted at the Evangelical United Brethren church in Reed Point with Rev. E. S. Tollefson officiating. Myrstol, born in Norway in 1890, came to the United States in 1909 and lived in Livingston, Big Timber, and near Reed Point before homesteading on Work creek and later purchasing the Lay ranch near Bridger creek. He served in World War I and is survived by his widow Alice, two brothers Carl of Big Timber and Ben in Norway. seven pallbearers and numerous honorary pallbearers participated.
A August 4 wedding at the Roscoe Smith ranch near Clyde Park united Miss Marilyn McCampbell and Richard Plaggemeyer in a Nazarenes ceremony attended by local families. The reception followed for about forty relatives and friends. The couple plans a ranch home near Big Timber after a Glacier Park honeymoon.
To Great Falls Mr and Mrs L H Bryan and family drove their son Clifton to Great Falls Fridance Sack a mere he is back to the na stationed at Chins Bea.
Frank Williams son of Mr and Mrs Ross Williams arrived home Friday from Kyoto Japan where he had been evacuated from Seoul during the Korean war outbreak. He is an Illinois Institute of Technology marine biology instructor under government contract and went to Korea in June to take over duties in Pusan.
The informal Lewistown ceremony August 12 at the Hunters home united Donna Lee Hunter and Stuart Peter Ellison. Rev Lloyd Halloway officiated with Ruth Bieber singing. The couple will reside near the Boulder Fork on the Ellison farm.
Guests of McKenzies Mr and Mrs Harry Cornfeld and daughter Nancy of Los Angeles and Frank Fryer of Livingston visited W D McKenzie home Saturday. California visitors Mr and Mrs Jack Rainey and daughter Kathy arrived for a visit with Mrs Rainey's grandmother Mrs Emma Gunderson and headed to Fostoria Ohio to see Mr Rainey's parents. Alberta Canada residents J D McInnes and Mrs McInnes visiting friends in town with Dorothy Barbour and Dorman Kellogg. they drove to Forsyth then returned for another day.
Hillcrest college Crusaders perform a sacred music program at Big Timber Evangelical United Brethren church on Sunday at 11. The program includes quartets and solos plus a gospel message and school story. Members include Mr Taetz, Miss Sukut, Mr Lehr, and Rev. Floyd Magsig, with Rev F Everal Wines hosting. The tour spans North Dakota, Montana, Washington and Oregon, first west of Montana.
The Tydings subcommittee reported no evidence of communists on the federal payroll as claimed by Secretary Acheson and President Truman. Senators Lodge and Hickenlooper did not concur, while others recalled Truman and Acheson defended Alger Hiss and other spies. The report faced strong opposition in the Senate. Director Hoover cites 54,000 genuine communists and about 500,000 others as a real menace.
