A Sunday event at the fairgrounds features a greased pig contest for children 14 and under with prizes of 10 and 3 dollars, a break-away calf roping for men over 50, horsemanship displays, and a horse without a bridle exhibition by Al Buchli starting at 2 p.m. Admission is 75 cents for adults and 25 cents for grade schoolers.
Palmer Finsvik and a scribe recall a joke during an impractical addition to an outdoor trip last week as four Scouts joined an unscheduled extra hike of two percent of a mile.
Russell Orcutt son of Mr and Mrs E A Orcutt of Spokane and Miss Florence Wildman daughter of Mrs Stella Wildman of Pullman were married Saturday evening June 10 at St Andrews Episcopal Church. Clergyman Rev C T Hills officiated.
Mrs Orcutt is well known in Big Timber, having taught home economies in the high school here two years ago.
The Big Fish exhibit at the Midland empire fair grounds failed as chlorine in the water killed multiple five pound specimens. Ed Furnish from the department captured a Loch Leven rainbow and other species from glass tanks as onlookers watched. Despite a charcoal filter, the water retained chlorine, causing further losses.
The article notes Furnish promising that the big fish that escaped will be back next season, asserting optimism for improved catches and future success.
The EUB church celebrated the 25th anniversary of the basement service with a crowd at morning and afternoon events. Adolf Myrstol prominent Reed Point rancher died suddenly of an acute heart attack yesterday afternoon in a Columbus doctor's office after feeling ill earlier in the day. Funeral services will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. from the Evangelical United Brethren church in Reed Point with Rev. E ed Tollefson of Livingston officiating.
Mary Patricia Davis married Loren Lee Aitken in a July 30 Glendale ceremony at the Little Church of the Flowers Forest Lawn Memorial Park. The bride, daughter of Mrs. F. E. Davis of Bell, wore Chantilly lace and illusion net with orange blossom tiara. the groom is Merle Aitken's son.
Helena Aug 7 At least 20 Montana counties plan tax cuts this fiscal year according to the Montana Taxpayers Association. Flathead County is expected to cut roughly 8 mills from the 1949 levy saving property owners over 78000. The association notes Beaverhead Carbon Cascade Fergus Golden Valley Lewis and Clark Meagher Mineral Missoula Musselshell Phillips Powder River Powell Prairie Rosebud Sweet Grass Toole Treasure Wheatland and others showing reductions, while 28 counties may still raise levies due to enhanced county activities.

Gardiner Aug 9 Two persons burned to death and three others were injured in a swift fire at the Park hotel early this morning. The dead are Mrs Charles Hay of Troy New York and Al Durochie of Casper Wyoming. Injured are Charles Hay Betty Beers and Paul Spradlin owner of the hotel. All are in the government hospital at Mammoth. The fire alarm was at 3 15 a m and the blaze was under control by 6 a m after two hours 45 minutes of effort.
The Northern Pacific seeks authority to abandon its Grey Cliff agency and switch to custodial service due to insufficient revenues. A public hearing is set for Tuesday August 15 at 1 p.m. at the station, where interested parties may present evidence for or against the proposal.
Harold K. Near of The Montana Power Co with Bozeman HQ met in Big Timber with Sen. Leo J. Cremer R L Tolson and Ros Williams to discuss relocating the pumping plant from Absarokee. Officials say the move is delayed while feasibility studies continue.
Governor Bonner proclaims the World War II veterans honorarium initiative will appear on the November 7 ballot. If approved it would raise 22 million dollars for about 55,000 Montanans with monthly payments of 10 dollars for US service and 15 dollars for overseas duty funded by a two cent per pack cigarette tax. Backers from the Veterans of Foreign Wars stress it is not a bonus. petitions totaling 17,901 were filed before the July 6 deadline.
The community cannery will operate tomorrow from 1 to 5 pm with Mrs. Edith Huyser and W G Robinson in charge. Season schedule depends on community response and participation.
A large group of Scouts spent a week in the hills for camping led by Dr. B. Olness and C. V. Schuler with Mac Johnson guiding. Participants include Donald Bray Jim McCauley Donald Miekush John Hager Milton Wordal Dale Beck Chuck Bray Jerry McCauley Kenneth Mlekush John Renneberg Curtis Jacobson Jerry Popanan Fred Olness and Delbert Guests. Leaders Jerry Chapin Ray Beck and Hubertchen with Scoutmaster Palmer Finsvik will relieve and stay through camp ending Sunday as it moved from Independence to Four Mile.
At the Big Timber Rifle and Pistol Club August 4 shoot it was decided to restart wandering trophy competition. Aimed at women shooters a new instruction class begins August 17 with six weekly Thursday sessions limited to 24 pupils using coach pupil training. 14 ladies attended the first meeting.
