Kentucky election triggers gun battle in Jackson
Former Breathitt County Sheriff Lee Combs died from wounds after a gunfight on Main Street in Jackson while two other prominent Breathitt figures were wounded. Lewis Combs, county chair of Governor Chandler's senatorial campaign, and Sheriff Walter Deaton were injured. A two story Sacramento rooming house fire in the west end killed three occupants and injured at least 12. Victims named are Mike Ayler 56 Pansy Harrison 3 and William Long 36 partially blind. Police suspect an arsonist may have started the blaze. Many residents jumped from second story windows to escape.

In Kentucky the August 8 Democratic primary produced a large Barkley lead over Governor Chandler as 4 058 of 4 313 precincts reported. Patrolman shoots man resisting arrest in Helena clash
In Clancy near noon Roy Hutcheson, a paroled Idaho convict, slugged Highway Patrolman Alex Simpson during an arrest attempt. Simpson shot Hutcheson in the chin, cuffed him, and transported him to Helena for questioning in a bogus check case. Simpson suffered severe injuries and awaits further care.

Stockholm August 6 Warner Oland 58 famed for Hollywood oriental roles died Saturday in a Stockholm hospital after pneumonia illness.
