A local note recalls a string of past rumors in Big Timber driven by John Deegan. The pieces, including a false Twenty Years Ago item about cattle rustling, were elaborate fabrications that fooled readers and authorities until debunked.
National Library Week runs April 16 to 22 with a tea on Friday April 21 from 3 to 5 PM in the library basement. Raymond Hoem of Big Timber Montana was elected to the board of directors of the National Rifle Association during the NRA's 90th annual members meeting in St. Louis Missouri. He will serve a three year term on the 75 member board of the organization with headquarters in Washington DC.
Mr and Mrs Al Mehus traveled from Helena for a weekend visit with John Herries. Their son Jerry recently graduated from Navy dental technician school in San Diego and will begin dental apprenticeship aboard the USS Oriskany at Treasure Island San Francisco California.
Peter Johnson 93, died at the Big Timber Rest Home at 9:30 a m Sunday from infirmities of age. A Grey Cliff resident, he lived in Montana after earlier stints in Denmark and Nebraska. He worked as a sheepherder and once owned a lower Sweet Grass homestead. Funeral services are set for 2 o'clock Friday afternoon at the Lowry Chapel.
Rose Ann Buster and Patsy Nottingham report the sixth and final week of the 4-H Junior Leaders rat project aided by Home Demonstration Agent Louise Guild. Tornado weighs 40 grams more than Crisco, with color and tail health noted.
An article in the Monthly Review of the Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis notes that small farm units are being absorbed by larger ones. Over the past two decades US output rose 50 percent while farm labor fell 50 percent and crop acres declined 2 percent. The ninth district shows need for more farm-size expansion amid many small, low-income farms with underused labor and capital. The piece links changes to postwar food demand and a postwar technological surge.
Sayre Nevin, longtime Big Timber barber, buys a four chair shop in Bozeman's Butterey shopping center and assumes management. He employs two barbers and retains the Grand barber shop in Big Timber under Ben Tinnes. The Nevin family plans to move to Bozeman after settling other Big Timber interests.
The USDA prepared Water Supply Outlook for the coming irrigation season in the upper Yellowstone drainage, received by Harold Smith. Farmers are advised to plant early maturing crops like millet and hay grains, defer new hay stands, and consider fallowing or land reclamation to conserve water. Snowpack is 15 percent above last year but at 72 percent of the 1943-57 average. streamflow should rise slightly in high elevation streams, while Yellowstone river flow between Corwin Springs and Sidney remains 72 to 51 percent below the past 15 year average.
In their season opener at Columbus the Herder track team posted strong scores led by Big Timber. Joe Beley won the quarter and 220 yard dashes and ran on a second place relay as Tom Larson excelled in the broad jump and high hurdles. Red Lodge led by Brown dominated distance events. Absarokee edged Big Timber late in the discus.

A large crowd filled the high school gym for the Lions club talent show with Clem Stirn as emcee. Performances ranged from Melville school songs to The Crema tion of Sam Magee and an array of vocal, instrumental, and dance numbers led by multiple directors and participants.
The Big Timber Grade School will hold its annual Science Fair on April 14 from 7 to 8 30 p m with displays and demonstrations by Grade 1 through Grade 4 students. Projects cover electricity, weather, plants, animals, machines and more with live animals and student created models and charts.
SGHS junior Alex Adams placed fourth in the chemistry division at the sixth Montana Science Fair in Missoula on April 7 8 with the project Conducting Properties of Ionized Solutions He had won first at the district fair in Bozeman and was among 325 entries Five students earned honorable mention and Arthur L Schump accompanied Adams to Missoula
District Judge Haswell rejected Joseph Wold Jr. and the Yellowstone Valley Protective Association's bid to stop Interstate 10 routing between Livingston and Laurel along the Yellowstone river south bank. The ruling allows state routing if not arbitrary, and finds no mandatory hearings for interstate highway decisions.
Harold Rue announces that several residents have completed standard and advanced Red Cross first aid courses and are eligible for instructors training. Those who finished the standard course include Herb Mc Cauley Owen Moore Arnold Mosness Steve Ollestad and others. A Red Cross field representative will visit soon to conduct instructors training for the advanced graduates.
Helena notes Monday April 10 as the kickoff date for Montana Treasure Steak the official cut of beef. Governor Nutter reveals a nationwide promotion to fly steaks to dignitaries including President Kennedy and Vice President Johnson. April is proclaimed Montana Treasure Steak month. The steak is endorsed by the State Advertising Department.
The Timber TOPS club hosts 150 members from eighteen Montana clubs for the third annual State Recognition Day in Big Timber at the American Legion hall on Saturday April 15. Registrations start at 9 am with a noon luncheon followed by afternoon ceremonies crown and award winners and a 6 pm banquet with guest Herb McAllister of Great Falls.
County Superintendent Grace Carney reports winners in the rural spelling contest by grade with teacher names in parentheses. Grade 5 winners include Richard Jarrett and Linda Clayton, Grade 6 winners Wally James Paper and Linda Fellows, Grade 7 winners Jerri Sweeney and Sharon Terland, Grade 8 winners Joyce Faw and Jim Crum. Rural achievement tests are set for April 17 and 18 with locations at the high school hot lunch room for grades six to eight and home schools for other grades.
The Big Timber Rainbow assembly held its annual vesper service on Founders Day. Helen Strobel welcomed guests and introduced Rev. Ben Knopp who spoke on the Rainbow organization. A Rainbow choir and Myrtle Camp solo performed, followed by tea served by the Past Matrons club.
