Bill Cole defends the John Birch Society arguing its aim is fighting communism while stressing free enterprise and individual liberties. He notes the group uses history books newspapers and magazines as tools and contends criticism stems from a lack of information and sensational reporting.
Attendees heard 19 soloists and a capable ensemble under director Robi Woolley signaling a lift for the high school band. Roger Rine was announced and Susan Fallang, Sandra Hetland, Judy Carl, Deborah Lowry, Mary Standish, Roberta Cremer, Connie Christ served as accompanists. Woolley selected players for the Big Timber grade school concert to follow at the grade school gym Thursday evening.

Lions Club plans a Saturday April 8 8 pm talent show with over 60 participants and 10 dozen lightweight brooms for sale. Admission Adults 1.00 Students 0.50 Children 0.25 proceeds go to the Lions youth activity fund. Notable participants include Mrs Tope Strobel Richard Hager Mrs Chas Harper and many others. The show promises intrigue and surprises as fundraising for youth activities continues.
A sunny Easter Sunday drew a large crowd to the Lions Club annual Easter egg hunt with prizes awarded to winners in four age groups. Notable first place finishers include Kathy Plaggemeyer Jodi Kalberg Douglas Solberg and Mary Lynn Stirn. Prize distribution delayed due to prize type confusion. call Rev. R. R. Price to claim.
R. O. Kallem of Broadview has leased the Husky station at the intersection of Highways 19 and 10 and has taken charge. He works daily while recovering from pneumonia. Kallem’s daughter Janice joined SGHS freshmen, while his wife and son stay in Broadview until school ends. the family plans to sell their Broadview store and service station and rents the Frank Prevost home on Seventh Ave East.
Mr and Mrs Thorvald Aalgaard sell their ranch near the Yellowstone bridge north of town to Glenn W McBride. Ownership passes at month end. The McBrides will build a new home on the 157 acre place and move in when complete. The Aalgaards will move to town.
Miss Amy Wold extension family life specialist from Montana State College will discuss Growing Old Gracefully Friday April 7 at Dallman hall from 7:00 to 9:30 pm. Potluck will follow with leaders from Geed Neigh bone Harmony Kent and Home Demonstration clubs attending. Representatives from other groups and interested individuals may attend by notifying Louise Guild.
A terse note reports Mrs Signy Deeney substituting for her mother when Robert Woolley was summoned to Fromberg this week amid an unclear local matter.
In a 4-H project led by Home Demonstration Agent Louise Guild, two rats named Tornado and Crisco are fed daily and weighed regularly to compare effects of good versus poor diets. Tornado now weighs almost 40 grams more than Crisco, whose color change prompted the Diet decision to keep both diets unchanged. Volunteers may visit the Montana Power office to view the rats at 12:30 daily.
Leaders for foods meet April 12 at 1 30 p.m. at Louise Guilds home with bulletin and materials. clothing leaders convene the following Wednesday at the same time. New materials issued, missing items supplied, decisions on fair exhibits and training for judging. General leaders welcome.
Jubilee Lanes in Billings crowned the city bowling champions as their team posted 3108 to win the first annual City Club Lanes tournament. Fichtner Chevrolet of Bridger placed second with 3069, while Sweet Grass Creamery took third with 3066 in the handicap event. Jim Long won the singles with 690 and $110. others earning prizes included Leonard Fichtner 677, Albert Eisenman 667, Don Holloway 665, Bob Bangert 661, and Kenny Hensley and Don Mahana tied at 660 among lane standings.
A local doctor saved Bobby Nevin after his heart stopped during a teeth extraction at Community Hospital. The surgeon opened his chest and began heart massage within seconds, reviving him after about two minutes of clinical death. He is recovering very well.
Mary 29 Miss Ruth Hathaway daughter of Mr and Mrs Vernie Hathaway married Walter Plaggemeyer son of Mrs Delia Plaggemeyer in a Wednesday evening ceremony. Rev Alan Hathaway brother of the bride presided before 48 relatives under pink rose arch. Bride wore a lace waltz length gown with Sweetheart neckline and a pearl necklace. maid of honor Miss Terry Hathaway wore pink lace gown. best man was Richard Plaggemeyer. mothers wore floral and blue street length dresses. Music by Mrs Henry Walton accompanied the soloist. Continued on page eight.
Joseph L. Comfort, 56, was found dead in his bed at the Grand Hotel. A coroner’s jury heard 18 witnesses but could not determine the cause of the fatal injury. Autopsy indicated suffocation from a skull fracture and possible injury occurred days before death. Witnesses described a wrestling incident with Lars Warp and a torn coat found in Comfort’s room. Funeral services were held at Lowry Chapel with burial in Mountain View.
Voters approved both the grade school and high school special levies. Russell Smith and Byron Manley won three year terms on the grade school board. Grade school levy 153 to 79. high school levy 280 to 169 unofficial. In Big Timber results were 139 to 97 for the high school levy with 161, 159, and 148 votes for the grade school trustees. Voters over 230 participated in the grade school election.
The Davis and Manley A G bowling team won the Maverick League championship by a half game over Bankers, last year’s champs. Bankers led by one game entering the final week but faltered against Klindt’s, losing by two pins in the first game. Judy Etzold starred with 626 across three games and 245 in a single game, while Mervin Wertz earned the most improved average award for Ben Franklin.
Elizabeth Steensland and two EMC Associated Women Students members travel to Madison Wisconsin for the national convention of the Intercollegiate Association Women Students. The group began at Eastern in 1959 and the convention runs this week.
In Big Timber Harold Roe narrowly defeats Oscar Forsythe 226 to 217 for mayor. Incumbents Dean Lowry Clarence Petaja win ward one aldermen while Henry Klindt John Murphy take ward two. Other officials Dorothy Barbour mayor and C A Bishop police magistrate show strong supports. Ward details list vote totals for each race.
