Volunteers led by Mrs. Ella Adam will knock on doors in Sweet Grass county during April to raise funds for cancer research and aid. East side captains are Mrs. Holmberg and Mrs. McLauchlan, west side captain is Mrs. Ullman, with Virgil Gust collecting from McLeod Street business houses. The drive aims to inform residents and spur early medical visits to save lives amid high cancer mortality.
Mr and Mrs Lyle Boese and daughter Susan were Easter Sunday guests of Mrs Boese's parents Mr and Mrs Lawrence Hughes in Boyd.
Veteran wildlife cameraman Jim Bond brings his color motion picture to Big Timber in the Sweet Grass county high school gym on Wednesday April 8. Sponsored by the Jaycees the show features bull moose caribou grizzly bears and sheep with fishing footage to inspire viewers. Bond highlights his decades in outdoor photography and hunting while noting his Weatherby rifle and cameras as key tools.
Last rites for Gilbert C. Johnston 79 were held at Lowry Chapel. He died after a hospital stay, with Rev. Ocee Johnson officiating and music by Homer and Mrs Esterbrook. Interment was in Mountain View. Johnston was born May 30 1884 in Fullerton Nebraska and lived as a rancher in several states before settling in Miles City area then Big Timber. Survivors include son George Johnston and daughter Lila Nelson plus five grandchildren and fifteen great grandchildren.
Three junior boys at SGHS were chosen by faculty as delegates to Boys State, August 15-23, 1964. Delegates are Lee Langhus, Rich Paulson and Ken Schilling with alternates Ben Taylor, Dennis Hale and Ole Orestad. The event, sponsored by the American Legion at Western Montana College of Education in Dillon, aims to provide citizens and government experience. Local sponsors include Legion Post 19, the Jaycees, Masons, Lions and Moose.
A Montana FFA group led by Ken Schilling and Ole Oie stad will attend the state convention in Bozeman on April 3 and 4. Delegates from 62 chapters join in state business sessions with Schilling as local president and Westernvelt as 1st vice president. Livestock judging and shop contests will involve Langhus Brekke Crum Strobel. More than 400 Future Farmers from across the state will participate in activities sponsored by Montana State College and the Montana State FFA association.
A large incinerator is being installed east of the city dump to burn blowing paper and reduce trash on the flats. Mayor Klindt says its wide west entrance allows easy access for the Clouse garbage truck. The unit rests on skids for movable cleaning and relocation.
The Hill Burton plan and a proposed Big Timber Rest Home were discussed by the Lions Club at a Tuesday noon meeting. Dr. Vernon Standish presented a fact sheet listing eight points urging Rest Home needs in Sweet Grass county and urging elected officials to explore construction and financing options before a final decision.
Russell Smith Albert Osen and Arvid Lawson filed for the two Big Timber school board seats. Incumbents Smith and Osen had previously filed. A 11 mill special levy to fund the district remains tied to the April 4 election with polls 2 to 6 p m at the school building.
