David W. Refsland of Big Timber received the Distinguished Service Award at Humble Oil Dealers convention in Billings. He was one of three men from 400 Enco dealers attending the 15th annual event last week.
The Board of Trustees of Sweet Grass County High School requests voter approval of a special levy to raise 55000 this year, about 9 mills, to maintain operations after state limits were not raised. Election is April 3 from noon to 8 PM.
Cancer Month April marks the national drive with kickoff events for the 1971 American Cancer Society campaign. Mrs O M Mabry leads as Crusade and Service Chairman, with Mrs Vance Ramberg as co chair. West side captains include Mrs Carl Mosness and Mrs Frank Saloomonsen. East side organizers are Mrs Bill Pedula and Mrs Richard Counter. John Jacobs and Phil Moulden oversee the business district. rural area captain is Mrs Roger Whidden. Service awards honor seven volunteers for five years of help, including Mrs Joe VanderVoort and Mrs Albert Strand. A new film Cancer a Research will be shown April 6 to the Lions Club at noon. The convention recognized outstanding service station management in 1970. awardees include David and Marlene Mabry, Lou Hulbert, and Paul Crawford. Humble’s R A Chidsey notes the convention trains ENCO dealers from several western states to improve service. The Mabrys reside at 121 East 9th in Big Timber.
Marcia Berg eight grade daughter of Mr and Mrs Arnold Berg won the annual Big Timber Grade School spelling bee against more than twenty contestants. Clyde Chapel and Ron Stief finished second and third. Berg and Chapel advance to the regional meet on Saturday April 3 at 10 a.m. Ron Stief is an alternate.
The body of O L Montgomery a Laurel fisherman missing since January 18 during an ice fishing trip on the Yellowstone near Grey Cliff was found by Don Toreski and George Ritter Saturday around 4 30 p m floating face down in an eddy of the main river about one mile downstream from Reed Point eight miles from the entry point. The open river now visible despite banks still edged with ice as searchers continue for Henry Haug a Big Timber businessman who disappeared in early February with his pickup and tackle found on the ice near the Grey Cliff bridge.
A well attended event at the Legion hall drew about 300 people to welcome 70 new families to Sweet Grass. The gathering featured performances by the Sweet Sixteen choir Bailey brothers and others while T-Bone Cow Belles managed registrations and refreshments. Grace Olson presided over the T-Bone meeting with 18 members present and plans for CDO publicity discussed. Lucille Anderson was nominated for State Vice President by the Cow Belles nominating committee.
The Community Development Organization organizes a county wide cleanup set for Saturday April 24. Volunteers will use the old theatre building as a pickup station from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Pay rates include 1 cent per pound for newspaper and glass, 3 cents for aluminum, 3 cents on 10 16 ounce bottles, and 6 cents on quart bottles.
Pam Starr and Clayton Davis named to Montana All-State Band at Montana State University May 7 and 8. Starr plays second oboe and Davis baritone. selections based on statewide auditions.
The Morningside Concert Band from Sioux City Iowa performed a two hour concert for sixty young musicians in Big Timber Montana. SGHS band director Lawrence Smith arranged the state stop and local families hosted the group with dinner and an overnight stay and breakfast.
Clara Reinbold was crowned queen and awarded a trophy at TOPS Honor Night in the Library basement for reaching her weight goal. Evelyn Woodhouse received recognition for the greatest weight loss in the local chapter in 1970. Officers installed by Jeanne Elgen included Doris Roots president Ruth Brannin vice president Sharyl Larson secretary Donna Holmberg treasurer Susie Matthews weight recorder Clara Reinbold reporter. Low calorie refreshments followed the program.
The Big Timber Rodeo will be held Sunday August 8 after approval by the rodeo committee led by co chairmen Phil Mouden and John DeCock. Rodeo producer Reg Kesler confirmed the date switching from the original early June schedule.
Palm Sunday Community Chorus presents a concert at the grade school auditorium from April 4 at 8 00 PM led by Christiansen and Geo W Perrill with Serged notes and community participation.
Mr and Mrs Smith were honored at a Golden Wedding anniversary open house at the Evangelical church from 2 to 5. Hosts were Mr and Mrs Harold Esp and Mr and Mrs Roy Nunley of Big Timber with Reed Point help. A three tier cake with golden bells, coffee and tea service, vocal performances, tributes, and floral decorations marked the afternoon.
The Pioneer prints a letter from Mrs Robert Leicht formerly Betty Esp of Big Timber now in Sheboygan Wisconsin subscribing for her two sons in the service Sp4 Steven Leicht a company courier in a field hospital near the Vietnam DMZ and Pfc. Mark Leicht recently in West Germany for signal and radar maintenance Mark writes that a village near their camp 50 miles north of Frankfurt reminds him of Big Timber where he spent summers with his grandfather Leo Esp. The boys want news of their adopted town and friends. First granddaughter Tawna Rae born March 21 in Denver to Forrest Ullman and Ray Gant weighing 6 pounds 154 ounces joining brother Todd. The Ullmans visited Denver recently and helped in the Gant household.
Emma B Rees 96 pioneer resident died at Pioneer Nursing Home where she had been patient since January 15 1966 Funeral services were held March 27 from Lowry Funeral Home with Rev Eugene Nilsen officiating Burial in Mountain View Cemetery Born September 28 1874 Auxvasse Missouri she moved to Montana in 1879 with relatives and lived near Hunters Hot Springs. Arthur I Berg 79 died at Sweet Grass Community Hospital services March 26 at Lowry Funeral Home with military rites and church involvement interment Mountain View Cemetery. Lola McKenzie 66 died at Pioneer Nursing Home March 26 service at Lowry Funeral Home with organist and church member status buried Mountain View Cemetery born September 23 1904 Bozeman daughter of Edward Boddy married Donald McKenzie 1924 later moved to Big Timber. Amy Rees Funeral services noted for longtime county clerk survivor lists and extended kin including Alva Rees Robert Rees Yale Rees Lola Lavold and about 50 grandchildren.
Local elections occur Saturday for school levies and District 1 trustees and Monday for city offices with no races except police magistrate. Voters are urged to participate in local government and school issues. do not fail to vote.
Write‑in candidate Bob Stief files for the District 1 school trustee ballot. The vacancy follows Dr. Vernon Standish’s resignation. Stief, a Burlington Northern agent and Big Timber homeowner, highlights his family focus and interest in schools as key qualifications. He is married to Joanne and they have four children.
