Khrushchev charmed San Francisco during West Coast stay

AP dispatch reports Khrushchev praising peace and friendship during a three day West Coast visit. He spoke of frank talks with Eisenhower, urged disarmament, and urged peace treaties with East Germany. He charmed audiences in San Francisco and prepared to tour Des Moines Iowa for agricultural engagements.

Quota Set for 1959 Community Chest Drive

Drive Chairman Paul Casavant announced a $37 700 quota for this year’s campaign starting October 7 nationwide, up $2 700 from 1953 due to expanded agency services. A new Biddeford Saco Youth Recreation Inc will receive $9 000, joining Boy Scouts of Pine Tree Council, Biddeford Public Health Nursing, Gorgeana Girl Scouts, and Saco Public Health Nursing. The new agency starts 1960 to create a centralized, year round youth recreation program managed by a full time recreation director coordinating efforts in Biddeford and Saco.

Franciscan Nuns Open New Convent In Saco

Three nuns from the Franciscan Sisters of the Atonement in Graymoor New York arrive at Most Holy Trinity in Saco to staff the parish. They will teach catechism, visit families, and conduct parish programs at 44 46 High Street in the renovated convent. Donations funded the chapel and living quarters with gifts from local families and parishioners.

Date Results In Teen Aged Death In Bronx Gang Clash

In New York AP reports a 17 year old Bronx student John Guzman of Morris High School was shot on school steps by eight youths in trenchcoats after dating a girl from another gang. Guzman died two hours later after naming blue raincoat as gang symbol. Seven youths were later arrested or sought, led by Edward Peres who confessed. Police say the blue coat signified leadership in a Puerto Rican street gang Royal Knights. Guzman had belonged to Valiant Crowns but said he left. Shortly after, a grand jury indicted seven other Puerto Rican youths for first degree murder in a separate West Side playground stabbing of two 16 year olds on Aug 30.

Beaupre Elected Leader of Catholic Foresters

Paul E. Beaupre was elected chief ranger of Lafayette court Catholic Order of Foresters at a Biddeford meeting. Offiers named included Joseph Letellier Raoul LaBranche Emile Fecteau and Eugene Grenier with Arthur Vachon as custodian. Installations set for October 17 followed by social and dance.

Durant Resigns From Saco Police Post

Patrolman Benjamin Durant resigns from the Saco Police department to join Portsmouth Naval shipyard. The move marks the sixth resignation in the Saco force within a year, following prior exits by Norman Harvey Fred Foran George Nemet John Kseavitch and Norman Lombard. Two new special reserve officers, Ormand V. Bedell and Roger J. Tardif, were appointed.

Hermit kills lumber operator then dies in cabin blaze

Hiram Johnson 75, longtime hermit in a wilderness cabin, killed Lester Spear 49 during a dispute over owed money. Johnson then held a sheriff's posse at bay for hours before dying by his own actions as deputies approached. An ambulance and medical examiner aided the ensuing search and investigation.

Bellerose Promoted to Sergeant on Old Orchard Beach Force

Police Chief Ernest Murphy announced Patrolman Leopold Bellerose has been promoted to sergeant to fill a vacancy. The veteran officer will handle the night shift at Old Orchard Beach, Murphy said.

Gas Tax Will Jump Oct. 1

Washington reports the federal gasoline tax will rise to four cents per gallon starting October 1 to fund the 41,000 mile interstate highway program. President Eisenhower signed the bill but said it fails the pay as you go goal, hoping to avoid disruption to state finances and the economy. The levy is projected to bring in about a billion dollars before the tax reverts to three cents on July 1, 1961.
