Labor secretary James P. Mitchell told the AFL-CIO convention in San Francisco that the government is swiftly targeting racketeers and subversives in union leadership under Landrum Griffin. He said he wired Teamsters President James Hoffa to list officers with criminal or Communist records within 10 days and urged action by Hoffa on these individuals. Mitchell sent similar telegrams to other unions as he denounced abuses amid a stalled steel strike and looming Taft Hartley injunction.
The Biddeford Saco lodge of Elks filed a tax return with the IRS for eight slot machines seized by State Police in a Labor Day raid. IRS Maine director Whitney Wheeler said the amount and penalties depend on operation length. a $250 yearly device tax plus a 5 percent monthly delinquency penalty may apply. The Saco court ordered machines turned over for destruction. lodge attorneys Crowley Spill and Caron pleaded not guilty and paid a $100 fine.
Joseph N. Nason aged 41 of Buxton road Saco was named a regular patrolman by the Police and Fire Commission to fill a department vacancy. He has previously served as a special police officer in Saco and several such appointments were anticipated by Monday.
Beverly Hills lawyer Jerry Giesler, 73, famed in Hollywood for high profile cases, is hospitalized after a heart attack suffered Friday at home. Dr. Jack A. Scheinkopf described the attack as not very serious.
Two North Berwick men pleaded guilty at York County Superior Court. Alfred Tracy Court, 22, admitted larceny of $99 leather from Prime Tanning in Berwick on June 19 and received a suspended sentence to the Men’s Reformatory with two years probation. His brother Dennis, 25, pleaded guilty to receiving and concealing the same leather.
