Saco Welcomes New Pastor Rev Stanley A Bennett

Rev Stanley A Bennett of Providence Rhode Island has accepted a call to lead the United Baptist church of Saco. He and his wife will move to the Saco parsonage the week of November 23 and he will begin duties on November 29. Bennett, born in Providence, is a graduate of Classical High School Gordon College Andover Newton Theological School and studied at the University of New Hampshire. He has pastored in Freeport Williamstown Gardner and Providence and serves on Rhode Island Baptist state convention boards and councils.

Girl Scouts of Troop 27 held officer elections Monday at the Scout hall Pool Street. Officers elected include Charlotte Dupont president and Mary Reilly recording secretary. A braiding session followed by a combined Halloween birthday party featured decorations and favors for each Scout.

Diamond Jubilee Of Met Opens With Usual Glamor

The Metropolitan Opera launched its 75th season with the debut of Giulietta Simionato as Azucena in Il Trovatore and a starry opening night audience. Notables included Greer Garson, Rosalind Russeff, Van Cliburn, Rosalind Elias, Hank Greenberg, Bob Feller, and Hope Hampton as fashion highlighted the gala. The Met drew an estimated 86,000 attendees for a 25 week season, the longest in its history.

DeMolay Mothers Elect New Officers in Biddeford Hall

DeMolay Mothers circle in Masonic hall Biddeford elected officers led by President Mrs Lawrence Bowie. Officers include Mrs Paul Hill vice president Mrs Paul Woodman secretary Mrs Daniel Falvey treasurer and Mrs Bertha Huntress chaplain. Robes were completed and more material received. All day sewing sessions set for November 2 and 4 at Mrs Audrey Milne’s home in Saco. A demonstration by Mrs Hester Hanson followed.

Youth Hurt In Collision With Truck In Biddeford

Roger Compagna eighteen of Buxton road is listed in fair condition at Webber hospital after his car collided with a tractor truck on Elm Street Biddeford early this morning. He suffered multiple contusions and a mild concussion with possible rib fractures. Miles Dickinson thirty five of Hudson the truck driver said he saw the car heading toward him and that the collision struck the left rear wheel. Both vehicles were heavily damaged. Patrolman Norman Poirier investigated.

Museums Given Art Collection To Major Galleries

Mrs. William R. Timken widow of a roller bearing magnate left a vast art collection worth millions to New York Washington and San Diego galleries. Timken was found dead in her Fifth Avenue apartment after a search uncovered a will. Her attorney Joseph M. Hartfield said the Metropolitan Museum of Art would receive the bulk of the collection.

Castro Vows Firing Squads as Anti US Rally Grows

In Havana Fidel Castro urged crowds of 250000 to 400000 to back executions by military tribunals against enemies of the revolution. Portland Prisoners In Revolt Over Bean Chow

Inmates at Cumberland County Jail staged a brief sit-down protest last night over meals described as beans for the third straight night amid a boiler breakdown. Police Lt. Feeney persuaded 32 prisoners to return to cells after about 15 minutes. This followed an April riot and a grand jury finding Sheriff Allen H. Jones guilty of gross negligence.

Norway AP reports parolee Paul N. Dwyer, released after 22 years, was given a day off by his new hotel employer to spend time with friends before starting as manager. He heads to work tomorrow, just short distance from the crime scene.

Ex-convict pleads guilty in manhunt and abduction case

Rodney Austin 44 pleaded guilty to a fugitive from justice charge and waived rendition to face abduction and rape charges involving a 14 year old babysitter in Damariscotta Maine. He was captured on the Mohawk Trail and later driven to Shelburne Falls. Authorities plan to pursue federal warrants for kidnapping and Mann Act violations.
