Gale winds and heavy rains hit the Biddeford Saco area causing power outages and downed trees. Winds reached gale intensity with southeast seas ripping boats from moorings and damaging lobster traps. Lobstermen report heavy expected damage and boats and traps severely affected.

Rivers Of Maine Recede After Damaging Floods

Western Maine rivers and streams, swollen by three days of heavy rain, caused thousands of dollars in property damage. The Kennebec crest flooded a municipal parking lot and some riverside cellars while at least one death was reported. Saco and other rivers receded after cresting.

State of emergency declared in New Hampshire mountains

Gov. Wesley Powell declared a state of emergency in the White Mountains as highways blocked by landslides and washouts from torrential weekend rains. More than six roads, including routes to Canada, were closed, forcing about 80 families to evacuate. Some residents boiled drinking water due to contamination.

Abductor Caught in Bay State After Maine Boy Sitter Case

Rodney Austin, 44, of Newcastle, Maine, sought since Friday for abducting a 14 year old Maine babysitter, was nabbed by state police near Shelburne Falls after a farmer gave him a ride. He appeared unarmed, fled into woods, and was taken to Shelburne Falls barracks to await North Adams court on fugitive warrants for abduction and rape.

Dwyer Fights For New Trial After Parole

Paul N. Dwyer, 40, freed on parole after 22 years of a life sentence for the murder of Dr. James Littlefield, plans to pursue a new trial and acquittal. He says he changed his plea from innocent to guilty to avoid violence from a deputy jailer who later also faced murder charges.
