Cuba-U.S. ties worsen as Castro rejects U.S. protest

Cuban officials led by Fidel Castro dismissed a U.S. protest accusing Cuba of anti American measures. The cabinet announced a new tax on mining concessions aimed at American owned Nicaro nickel plant and Moa Bay Mining Co. It also moved to reestablish military tribunals amid domestic opposition and faced protests from Cubans demanding action against a Western journalist. The State Department denied American-based air attacks and U.S. officials urged calm as Senate leaders criticized Castro’s leadership.

Hollywood AP report describes Beverly Radland age 17 denying pregnancy by Errol Flynn and seeking part of his estate. Her attorney Melvin Belli states she is not pregnant and aims to obtain inheritance rights from Flynn who died this month. Radland says Flynn dictated a Cuba document providing for her and a possible child.

Government seeks court injunction to end steel strike

Washington officials asked the Supreme Court to approve an injunction to halt the 106 day steel strike. The United Steelworkers challenged the court's jurisdiction as the government moved to end the stoppage and restore production.

Hartford AP report says Rev Dr Jon L Regier executive secretary of Home Missions division of the National Council of Churches urged ministers to reach untouched society sectors. He cited single women ghettos, frequent movers seeking upgrade, commuting masses, and laboring men and women as areas for church outreach in discussions on Christian resources in the space age.

New Drug Griseofulvin Cures Skin Diseases

In Miami Florida AP reports dermatologist Dr J L Pipkin says griseofulvin cures scalp ringworm athlete's foot and similar fungal skin diseases in a few days for about $20. Over 200 physicians from the US and 11 foreign countries call it the greatest medical discovery since penicillin during a meeting.

Two NH escapees nabbed by Biddeford police

Two youths from the N H Industrial School Manchester escaped last night and were found in back of a Main street jewelry store in Biddeford early this morning. Raymond Bolduc 17 of Dover and a 16 year old Manchester juvenile were arrested by Patrolmen Morin and Blais around 1 am after sightings in an alley. The store had no break in. Police said the youths hitchhiked from Manchester and a stolen car near the school was reported but not taken by them. NH authorities were notified to return the pair to Manchester.

Ex convict Rodney Austin held on 30000 bond

Austin, a 44 year old parolee from Maine State Prison, was held in 30000 bonds today for grand jury action on charges of abducting and raping a 14 year old babysitter Oct 17 in Lincoln County. He pleaded innocent in municipal court after being captured in Florida. He allegedly forced Sharon Simmons to leave the Damariscotta Mills home and pulled her away.

Hector Indicted On Murder Charge In Connecticut

Donald Robert Hector 274 of Norwalk Connecticut formerly of Biddeford and Old Orchard Beach was indicted by a Bridgeport Superior Court grand jury on second degree murder charges for the July killing of his wife Pauline 33 in their Norwalk home. He pleaded innocent before Judge Louis Shapiro with a jury trial set for November 10.

Eisenhower Seeks Western Summit Conference Details

President Eisenhower said he and Western leaders are ready for a pre summit meeting about mid-December but no site or exact time has been chosen. He noted Charles de Gaulle will be ready for a Western summit, with Harold Macmillan and Konrad Adenauer also involved, and that arrangements will proceed through diplomatic channels.

Husband Declared Sane At Time Wife Was Shot

In Augusta a medical examiner testified that Vincent Doyon was sane when he shot and killed his divorced wife Alice Doyon in her Portland apartment on August 10. Doyon, 36, faces murder charges, contending only manslaughter. Dr. Wilson H. McWethy cited a mania mental disorder definition to explain his earlier remark.

Beach Man Badly Hurt In South Portland Crash

Walter H. Clark, 30, of Spring Street, Old Orchard Beach, was seriously hurt when his car rammed a stopped truck near the Maine Turnpike exit in South Portland. He was taken to Maine Medical Center in Portland with injuries described as undetermined in extent. Clark was pinned in the car as Edward J. Jaynes and Dean Wamboldt, nearby filling-station operators, arrived. Jaynes cut the steering post with a hacksaw while Wamboldt helped breathing by inserting fingers. A wrecker was needed to pull the steering post free so Clark could be removed from the vehicle. The truck driver’s identity was not known at press time.
