Maine Guard Units Boost Strength Under Selective Reserve Plan

Five Maine Army National Guard units will reach war time strength under the Selected Reserve Force plan. The 262nd Engineer Battalion Combat Army and the 121st Public Information Detachment will go to stepped up status November 1, with units in Bangor Millinocket Belfast Calais Newport and Augusta. Training rises from 12 to 18 assemblies per quarter, each at least four hours. The move aims to make 150000 Guard troops ready for rapid combat, imposing higher costs and demanding broader public support.

Comet Set To Dazzle Pre Dawn Skies This Week

A newly found bright comet will appear before dawn across the nation. Colgate University Observatory director Anthony F. Aveni expects a peak in about eight days as the comet nears the sun and may break into smaller units. The spectacle could vanish after one solar pass.

Berkeley Astronomer Disputes Comet Sun Impact Prediction

Dr. Leland Cunningham of UC Berkeley challenges Russian astronomers who warn the comet will strike the sun. Clothing Firm To Build New Plant In Biddeford

John Roberts Inc a Biddeford clothing maker announces a 75000 square foot plant in the new Biddeford Industrial Park off Route 1 to employ about 200 more workers. The plant will be single story with modern lighting ventilation cafeteria and a nursery for workers children. Production capacity and staff will nearly double and a new training and recruitment effort with Bertrand Frank Associates is underway. The project includes bus service and ample parking while a nursery aims to aid working mothers.

Union Shop Repeal Bill Shelved in Senate Action

The Senate shelved for this year a bill to repeal Taft Hartley 14B allowing states to ban union shop contracts. Senate Leader Mansfield blocked cloture after Dirksen led a successful filibuster, defeating the measure for 1965. McNamara expects revival next year, while Mansfield keeps plans undecided.
