First Negroes Enter White Schools in New Orleans

U S marshals escorted four Black girls into McDonogh and William Frantz schools marking the first integration here in nearly a century. Police kept watch as white onlookers reacted with boos and shouts while some parents sought to remove children from classes.

Philias Richards Note Golden Wedding Day

The 50th wedding anniversary of Mr. and Mrs. Philias Richard was observed Sunday at a testimonial at the home of their son and daughter-in-law in Biddeford. Guests included Alphie Richard and grandchildren Peter and Pamela Richard, with a turkey dinner, reception, and anniversary cake.

Kennedy and Nixon meet at historic Florida conference

In Biscayne Florida a smiling John F Kennedy and defeated vice president Richard M Nixon held a sun drenched meeting at Nixon’s vacation headquarters. Kennedy arranged the session to heal campaign rifts and discuss bipartisan unity including potential Republican appointments in Kennedy’s incoming administration. An enthusiastic Kennedy crowd greeted him at Miami airport before he traveled to the island haven.

Five Maine deaths mark deadly hunting weekend

The Maine toll rose to five over the weekend with three deer hunters killed by gunfire, another in a traffic crash, and a bulldozer mishap. Victims include Walter F. Jasper of Auburn shot by hunting companion Edward C. Rumery near Farmington, Gifford Robinson of Steuben shot on Boss Robert Island, and Leland Lakeman of Wells asphyxiated by a charcoal grill on a camping trip near Medway. Adrien Hoar of Farmington died when a bulldozer toppled, and Mary M. Emero of Bath perished in a car crash into a rock driveway base.

Saco Mayor Cote Faces Democratic Challenge to renomination

Saco Mayor Charles R. Cote faces strong Democratic opposition to a second term as mayor. Charles Mistos, Democratic City committee chair, and Donald McCone, press secretary, criticized Cote over his appointments while praising his administration's overall work. McCone called it sad that a man who has done an administrative job refuses to admit Democrats helped put him in office. Cote said he would not promise only Democrats would be appointed if he runs again. Mistos, as chair, led the party’s critique amid the renomination fight.

Nelson Bids For Ward 6 Council Post

Walter J. Nelson of Biddeford announced his candidacy for Ward 6 councilman in support of Democratic mayoral candidate Joseph Fred Warner. Nelson said he joined Warner and his supporting candidates because he believes in their platform and leadership.

Biddeford Boys Held For Superior Court

Four Biddeford youths linked to a series of area breaks appeared before Judge Simon Spill in Biddeford municipal court. Each pled innocent and waivered examination, with probable cause found, and all four ordered held in 500 bail per count for the January term of York county Superior court. Watson, 18, faced eight charges including auto taking. Bouchard, 18, four charges plus an accessory. Glasscock, 17, three charges. and Martin, 18, one accessory. Three hunting violation cases were also heard. Continued on Page two.

Elizabeth Taylor Falls Ill in London Hospital Visit

Elizabeth Taylor, 28, was rushed to a London hospital amid a reported severe headache and fever. A studio spokesman cautioned against speculation while doctors assess possible meningitis after a mystery illness reappeared following earlier virus symptoms and a stay at the London Clinic.
