Thornton Library Proving Boon To Student Users

The Thornton academy Memorial library started in 1902 in memory of Charles Cutts Gookin Thornton offers 6 000 to 7 000 volumes for student use The library features a vertical file current events clipping and filing services and books of all kinds Mrs Evelyn Rowe the full time librarian notes popular reads include biography teenage and science fiction career and sports novels and voyages and travels She is assisted by 11 student library assistants Brian Anderson Margaret Colombe Danny Eastman Carol Emerson Janet Gregoire Carol Ivey Elizabeth Jordan Gloria Mooney Rachel Precourt Lorraine Rossignol and Suzanne Tardiff The assistants handle clipping sorting and bookbinding desk circulation and bibliographies earning a half point credit each The library’s circulation this year totals 4 706 fiction and 2 898 non fiction books Changes last year qualified Thornton as a fully accredited school All day library access replaced classes and the athletic director’s office moved to create a work room A freshman orientation program introduced two class hours of instruction and a follow up written project to apply study skills Mrs Rowe Brian Flynn and Edward Bean taught the program The goal is Independence in Learning and emphasizes lifelong library use Freshman study classes teach using information sources reference books card catalogs and periodical guides The project aims to foster curiosity and independent inquiry Continued on Page Two

Maine Considers District Realignment After Seat Loss

AUGUSTA Maine faces a decision on how to realign its congressional districts after losing one of its three House seats per the 1960 census. In San Juan Cathedral and several other churches, priests told Mass-goers that voting for Gov. Manila Crashes Claim 10 Lives at Subic Bay

Two U S Navy planes crashed near Subic Bay killing ten, including Rear Adm. Arthur F. Spring and his wife Clare. Also lost were aides Lt. Karl Ziegenhagen and Lt. Cmdr ade Smith, pilot. Lt. Cowles and Airman Cecil G. Johnson among others. eight on a helicopter accompanying the carrier Hornet crash were killed, with no survivors. An American Navy doctor and an enlisted man were slightly injured. The Springs had attended a military dinner dance in Manila before the fatal flight.
