Communion Service and Breakfast At Saco United Baptist

About fifty men from eight Biddeford Saco churches attended the annual communion service and breakfast at the Saco United Baptist church. Rev Eugene W Shrigley of Portland spoke on The Lost Bliss after the service, with Rev Norman J Langmaid and Rev Stanley A Bennett among the participants and guests.

Maine Highway Death Toll Hits 148 in Two Days

The Associated Press reports two more Maine fatalities raising the 1960 highway toll to 48. Victims include 3 year old Cynthia Lynn Eaton of South Berwick who darted into traffic and 36 year old sailor Joseph F. Mullen of Brunswick Naval Air Station who died in a crash with a loaded pulp wood truck. Police note a rifle found in Mullen’s car suggested a deer hunt. Earlier, Lawrence Gammon and his wife were killed crossing Route 25 near Limington, and Ellen Weiss of Lubec with daughters Mary Ellen and Kathy Rebecca died in a Dundee New York car-truck collision.

Warner Opens Biddeford Mayoral Campaign Rally

Mayorality candidate Joseph Warner and a slate opposed to the Biddeford administration held a rally and banquet at the Wonderbar. Warner, a St Francis College professor, accused current leaders of protecting their office and pledged an issues based campaign. He urged the administration to debate on the merits and outlined a serious program without detailing the problems.

Parking Ban At Saco Due Soon

The winter parking ban in Saco will begin November 21 and run until April 1. Police Chief Raymond Kerry announced the rule to keep streets clear for snowstorms so the street department can plow more rapidly after a storm.

State To Start Work On Saco Intersection

The Maine Highway Commission will authorize a project over 8000 dollars at the Beach Elm Main and North streets junction in Saco. The state will widen a section at Elms and Main, modify the triangle inside the intersection, and install traffic lights coordinated with existing signals. Engineering starts next week with construction planned for early spring. The city must provide right of way, maintain and power the lights, and restrict parking. otherwise the state covers all costs. Mayor Cote expressed thanks to the State Highway.

Old Orchard Beach to vote on new seven member charter

A public meeting at Old Orchard Beach High School gym will discuss a proposed charter replacing the five member Board of Selectmen with a seven member town council to govern five district councilors plus two at large seats. The charter defines five districts and sets election timing and duties for the new council and town manager. If approved, the charter would be submitted to the 100th legislature and voted on at a special election.

Cannery Hit By Million Dollar Fire in New Sharon

A spectacular early morning blaze destroyed the Medomak Canning plant in New Sharon, the town’s only industry. Loss exceeded $1 million, including 250,000 cases of canned vegetables. No one was inside. three buildings burned before crews from three communities arrived. Firefighters noted loud popping cans. cause undetermined. The plant year-round staff was 12, with up to 200 seasonal workers.
