In Cordoba violence last two days left six dead and heavy damage as snipers battled troops. Army controls city of 800000 with dusk to dawn curfew and a guarded downtown amid shattered windows and street debris.
A woman and her young son were critically injured when a sniper fire from a hotel balcony struck them while a man on a nearby balcony was killed. Police say two snipers were fatally hurt and six have died overall in the unrest. Thousands of striking workers and students attempted a two mile march toward the city center but were fired upon by army troops as auto workers joined about six thousand others in a downtown rally. Police then opened fire as the day’s clashes escalated amid a general strike.
An air force commander cited citizens unable to organize with military precision while a downtown officer said demonstrators sparked violence. The strike protested police action during two weeks of student protests over a 9 cent meal price rise at a university in Corrientes, with 11 killed since May 15.
New England and Canadian press attend a three day event sponsored by the town and Chamber of Commerce. Activities include golf fishing dancing a lobster bake and a miniature golf tournament with participants listed from Albany Times Union Boston Globe Hartford Times and other outlets.
