St Francis conferred 97 bachelor degrees at Maine campus

About 1,000 attended St. Francis College Maine commencement as 97 seniors received bachelor of arts degrees. Governor Frank Licht, awarded an honorary Doctor of Lay degree, urged a national higher education advisory board and noted unrest on campuses. Rt Rev Frederick Biddeford and others attended, with degrees presented by President Spath and Dean Warner.

Explosion at North Berwick kills three men

An explosion at a North Berwick rail siding destroyed a tank truck carrying methyl methacrylate, killing three men. The second truck driver Donat Jolicouer, 44, of Manchester, NH, escaped. Foam fought the fire as investigators note safety precautions in transferring the chemical to an underground tank for shipment to American Cyanamid's Sanford plant.

Poverty Program Extension Asked

Washington AP The Nixon administration proposed a two year extension for federal antipoverty spending rather than one to allow better planning and funding efficiency. Rumfeld said the two year extension is a commitment to evaluate what works and refine programs. He noted study teams will assess issues including relation between community action and Model Cities and state involvement in poverty programs.

Value House Hit By Thieves Again

Sometime during the night the Value House at Five Points Biddeford was broken into by what police say may be the same burglars. A 16 by 21 inch roof hole was cut to gain entry and the safe cracked open. Diamonds watches and a mined amount of money were taken. Officers Morin Friary and Hooper lead the investigation with the theft carried in 11 luggage pieces. Lt. Friary noted a strong possibility the same bandits struck three weeks ago. The Value House representatives refused to release details.

Viet Cong Shell Saigon Amid Spur of Fighting Near City

Viet Cong shelled Saigon early today marking the first such attack in two and a half weeks. Paratroopers from the 82nd Airborne swept areas 11 miles northwest of Saigon while Viet Cong forces contested nearby. An American adviser was killed at Dak To as rockets hit the field, and U.S. commanders reported light night attacks with several enemy casualties and captures. The battle shifted toward Dak To as Hanoi claimed Viet Cong momentum, continuing into Page Five.

French Runoff Set After Paris Presidential First Round

Georges Pompidou led with 43.95 percent in continental France as Alain Poher trailed with 23.44 percent in a crowded first round. Jacques Duclos won 21.53 percent as four others split the rest, prompting a June 15 runoff between Pompidou and Poher to decide the seven year term. Duclos urged voters to choose between illness and plague, while Poher eyed a broad appeal and Pompidou urged national reconciliation.
