School high renovation delays trim size and space

SAD 71 advances junior high renovations including a media center linking the junior and senior campuses. Inflation cuts the planned high school to 99,000 square feet with core capacity 800, while 5,000 square feet are removed from the science wing. Negotiations continue to buy 11.4 acres from Boston and Maine for 2,800 and to secure a right of way to the 33 acre Sea Road site donated by Rodney Ross. Critics fear delays and the lack of a right of way, but supporters insist the school remains a place to learn as enrollments climb toward 735 next year.

Amoroso considered top pick for Saco police chief

Dexter defends Amoroso as clearly the most qualified for the police chief job and says he hopes for confirmation at tonight's 7:30 City Council meeting in Saco City Hall. He rejects claims of cronyism, noting he has not met the four city posts appointees and that one lives in Saco while another grew up there. The council will review 35 items including Open Door program funding, a bicycle path proposal to Ferry Beach State Park, a water-supply request from Buxton residents, a Zoning Board of Appeals appointment, and details of the upcoming sidewalk art festival.
