Expressman hires seven youths for six jobs in Biddeford

A Saco expressman, Veranus Meserve, hired six Biddeford youths to speed a oats delivery. A seventh youth, a hanger on, joined the pay line and Meserve overpaid seven boys. After realizing the error, he chased the youths up York Hill, losing the extra 75 cent payments and vowing to hire only trusted helpers henceforth.

CHICAGO AP Elmo Williams offers instant tombstones dubbed while you wait delivering made to order markers in about 90 minutes His South Side shop across from a cemetery serves customers including an 85 year old client who planned ahead and paid for a marker to be set upon death Williams 59 previously spent 25 years as a monument salesman and now runs a family business with his son Andre They say Memorial Day heightens demand with about 20 orders weekly as grievers seek rapid grave markers by sandblasting epitaphs on granite Built on word of mouth and advertising the operation targets hurried customers who want a marker quickly or saved for later payment

In Gorham Maine AP Mitchell of Vassalboro won a mock Democratic primary with 31 votes while Rolde of York ran second with 19 and Barton of Portland third with 17 Absentee ballots shifted the final order with Bustin moving to third ahead of Barton Reeves did not attend events but sent a spokesman over 200 attendees filled a decorated hall noting the event was not predictive of the real primary.

Saco teenagers plan bicentennial hydrant art and parade

The Teens for Good Government of Saco TAGGS under Bryce Milne and Lois Jones plan to paint downtown hydrants with bicentennial designs such as stars and stripes or soldiers. Court orders York County funds release by deadline

A York County Superior Court justice set midnight Wednesday as the deadline for York County commissioners to release funds to five social service agencies. Justice William E. McCarthy denied a delay of his April 12 mandate. Agencies include York County Counseling Services $45000 York County Extension Service $33000 Camp Waban $5000 Human Services Dental Program $10000 Southern Maine Regional Planning Commission $15000.
