Control of gypsy moth infestations in wooded areas of Lyman and Waterboro by aerial spraying takes place this week. Infestations are near Kennebunk Swan Bunganut and Little Ossippee ponds, covering 1650 acres under a town state funded project supervised by the Maine Forest Service and State Entomologist staff.

Gypsy moth outbreak seen advancing toward peak in 1955-56
Extensive infestations in the southern third of the state during 1954 and 1955 showed excellent control with no mishaps. Cost ranged from 1.20 to 1.50 per acre depending on acreage. The gypsy moth, a general defoliator, prefers soak birch and poplar when young but later feeds on hardwood and softwood. it does not form tents or webs in tree crotches as eastern tent caterpillar does along roadsides.
