First American Prisoners Repatriated From Cuba
The first group of 101 passengers including 52 Americans and 46 Cuban refugees arrived in Miami from Cuba. Notable returnees included AP’s Harold Milks, Havana correspondent Robert Berrellez, NYT’s Ruby Phillips, and UPI’s Martin Houseman. Also aboard were priests, nuns, a Miami commissioner’s mother, and several others. Several repatriates spoke of losses and fear for families still in Cuba, with some prisoners previously jailed describing their experiences. Swiss diplomats accompanied many of the group, some having sought asylum at the Swiss Embassy.

Pepperell Landmark To Get New Look
The Pepperell Manufacturing Company will remove two and one half stories from its third oldest building to create a flat roof line with the neighboring mill. Built in 1851 as a cloth hall, the 60 by 60 foot structure housed weaving and bleaching efforts before later renovations. Prescott Howard notes the upper stories have no production value and repairs would cost more. The mill, part of Pepperell’s early plant, has a long history including relation to the Portland, Saco and Portsmouth railroad and early bell time work schedules.
