District Court Bill Moves On To Senate
AUGUSTA AP The statewide district court bill cleared the House on third reading with two technical amendments and moved to the Senate. One amendment increases full time judges from 15 to 16 and assigns two judges to Portland. another revises district boundaries and provides bonding for clerks and authority for clerks to take guilty pleas and fines at the judge's discretion. The House defeated 106 15 an effort to remove Franklin County from the system, a proposal opposed by rural towns. House Judiciary Chairman Rep John L Knight said the amendment would cripple the bill, noting Aroostook County has threatened to secede for years.
