Space Flight Plane Crashes In Kenya

A US transport plane on a Project Mercury mission crashed in Kenya. Seventeen aboard are believed killed, with wreckage found on a mountain near Nairobi. A logistics role and connection to the Nairobi contingency site are noted. NASA had no confirmed aboard and Mercury crews were not on board.

Kenneally Named Superintendent of School Union 4

Raymond A. Kenneally was chosen by the joint committee as superintendent of School Union 4 after two failed nominations. The offer of $8,000 for two years was accepted. The Biddeford Board of Education confirmed the election following the vote. Earlier bids for Willard Jacobsen and Andrew Frechette were rejected by vetoes or negative votes. May 3 had seen Donald S. Dow offered the post at $9,000 for two years, who declined.

Orbit Shot Set For Saturday

Cape Canaveral Florida AP plans to launch astronaut Malcolm Scott Carpenter into orbit Saturday in the Aurora 7 craft. Despite unfavorable Atlantic weather and 11 foot swells near the Canary Islands where the craft might land if aborted after liftoff, Carpenter’s physical and mental outlook remained bright as the mission neared.

Garland May Hold Debate With Tupper

The Associated Press reports a potential TV debate in May or June between Republican congressmen Stanley Tupper and Peter A. Garland. Tupper accepts an invitation from Portland's WGAN-TV for a joint news conference, while Garland has shown interest but not committed. The station plans to invite all four first district candidates, including Democrats Clyde Bartlett and Thomas L. Maynard.

Washington AP reports two ponies Macaroni and Tex faced no proof of living in luxury with human servants. Rep H R Gross questioned a police bill expansion, fearing the horses might be pampered.
