PRG signals openness to U.S. ties in Saigon speech

Huu Tho, chair of the PRG advisory council, said in Saigon the Provisional Revolutionary Government will establish diplomatic, economic, cultural and friendship relations with all nations that respect Vietnam sovereignty and refrain from internal interference. Laos Students Threaten Killings Over Corrupt Officials

In Vientiane unrest grows as student demonstrators threaten to execute three American hostages unless the Lao government ousts alleged corrupt provincial officials. A delegation from Pathet Lao and government officials traveled to Savannakhet to negotiate release of Sanford J. Stone, Daniel P. Ster, and Charles R. Pearcy, held under house arrest after anti-American protests. The U.S. Embassy notes authorities are treating the threats seriously while avoiding harm to the captives. The incident prompted an apology from the Lao government and prompted U.S. reassurances as a Laos-based U.S. program scales back staff amid anti-American sentiment and fears of Communist influence.

Atty General Takes Over York County DA Office

Attorney General Joseph Brennan arrived to install Assistant Attorney General Arthur Stilphen to take over York County District Attorney William Donahue's suspended office. Stilphen and Ronald Caron joined to form the prosecution team in York County Superior Court as Brennan indicated the suspensions followed an investigation into misconduct. Brennan said the case handling would shift under his authority with temporary staffing from Augusta as needed, and a formal petition to remove the three DAs would go to the governor and council. He noted delays to juries but that scheduling would begin immediately with additional A.G. staff aiding York County cases.

Saco Considers Pilot for Septic Waste Treatment

Saco city council weighed a pilot project to test the Chappell process to treat municipal and industrial septic wastes. If funded, about 24,000 gallons daily could be handled at Factory Island or Front Street plants, with EPA grant support and no out of pocket city costs. The plan aims to boost capacity without costly plant expansion and would involve Chemlan Co. and local firms providing personnel and waste streams.

Humorous Journal Note on a Secretary’s Spelling Skill

A lighthearted line notes that age matters less than a secretary's spelling ability. It playfully suggests a man cares more about accurate spelling than appearance, reflecting a tongue in cheek view of office humor.

It’s Now Law Honeybee Named Maine State Insect

Governor James Longley signed the bill naming the honeybee the official Maine state insect after 11 Kennebunk fourth graders inspired a January petition. Rep. James McMahon and Sen. Guy Marcotte backed the measure, which becomes law 90 days after signing. The students toured the State House, autographs were signed, and the class teased plans to lobby for a state snake next year.
