The Mayaguez rescue, as the freighter heads to Singapore, is seen by US officials as a message to China and North Korea that the United States will not be a paper tiger in Asia. Two Americans died, 14 missing, and an unknown number wounded after heavy gunfire during a Tang Island operation that lifted nearly 200 Marines. Rescued crew members will be flown home from Singapore.
