Johnson Seeks Federal Worker Pay Raise and Review

President Johnson urged Congress to approve an $853 million yearly raise for military personnel and federal workers. The plan calls for a 3 percent across the board increase for civil service postal and foreign service staff, with exemptions for top policymakers and about 600,000 blue-collar workers. Military pay would rise an average 4.8 percent for those with two years’ service and 2.7 percent for those under two years, plus benefits. Nearly 1,000 U.S. Army paratroopers and 1,400 Marines landed in South Viet Nam. They joined about 2,000 from the 173rd Airborne Brigade already there to defend Bien Hoa and Chu Lai near Da Nang. The total U.S. force rose to about 46,500 as Marine units expanded in Chu Lai and Da Nang.
