The Maine Liquor Control Committee backed a bill allowing Sunday liquor sales from noon to 9 PM for licensed hotels, class A restaurants, clubs, and takeout malt beverages. The 7-2 vote followed a large public hearing where many dry advocates opposed all three Sunday sales proposals.
Brig. Gen. Elias Wessin y Wessin backed off his plan to resign as the Dominican peace effort unfolds. U.S. officials noted his reconsideration after stating he would step down, with talks urged between junta head Imbert and rebel Caamano. Caamano met the papal nuncio as U.S. and OAS mediators seek an accord.
London AP reports British Prime Minister Harold Wilson warned against military nationalism as NATO ministers open a three day session. He stressed interdependence and a credible nuclear deterrent with the United States and Soviet Union as key powers. Spaak and Briosio urged continued unity citing Viet Nam and the Dominican Republic as challenges to peace.
Augusta AP The Appropriations Committee unanimously approved a $10 233 144 supplemental budget, trimming items sought by Governor Reed to 9.6 million. Democratic majority plans for a separate package may total about half the supplement plus more measures on education and state pay later.
Saco police investigate a break at the Biddeford Saco Country Club. Entry was gained by forcing a rear door and cash from a walk in freezer along with two liquor bottles were taken. Time window reported as Sunday night after 10 to Monday afternoon.
