Hiss Wins Right to Examine Pumpkin Papers

Washington AP Alger Hiss gains access to five microfilm rolls of the Pumpkin Papers after officials review for national security. Atty Gen Edward Levi said Hiss and three researchers will receive copies under the Freedom of Information Act. Hiss, a former State Department official convicted of perjury in 1949, maintains innocence amidst Whittaker Chambers’ spy allegations and the pumpkin-borne documents claim.

Uranium Monopoly May End

President Ford asked Congress to allow private industry to produce and sell enriched uranium for nuclear plants worldwide. He outlined broad proposals to end the government monopoly and keep three existing plants in Ridge Tennessee Paducah Kentucky and Portsmouth Ohio under federal ownership and operation.

Nuclear test yields far beyond Hiroshima impact in Nevada

A nuclear device ten times more powerful than the Hiroshima bomb was detonated at the Nevada Test Site early today producing between 200 and 1,000 kilotons. The blast at 5:30 a.m. PDT was felt in Las Vegas, about 90 miles away, with no damage reported.

Davis Case Goes To Jury Today

Walter E. Davis Jr faces murder charges in the December killing of Saco dairy worker Troy Ballenger. Prosecutors say Davis planned Ballenger's death on December 2 at the Thibodeau farm. Davis testified he acted in self defense after Ballenger punched him and he claimed to have accompanied Ballenger to retrieve his car. The jury began deliberations after closing arguments and judge instructions.

Decisions On Donahue Cases Move Toward Quick Ruling

Superior Court Justice Harry Glassman said he will decide the Donahue Brennan case as soon as possible after Friday's formal arguments. A ruling could come before next week end. The matter centers on a 1951 Maine law allowing the attorney general to act in place of the district attorney.

Biddeford Considers Formal City Employee Policy

Biddeford officials tabled for study a formal comprehensive personnel policy for all city employees not covered by union contracts. The plan, drafted with revisions by Finance Committee and Joanne Doyle, would replace the patchwork rules and carry stronger job security and advancement provisions. A revised pay scale for non union workers accompanies the policy and first reading is slated for next Tuesday.
