Legion Conclave Nears End at Old Orchard Beach

Opening session of the American Legion's 42nd annual convention was held at Palace ballroom in Old Orchard Beach with remarks by Waterville leaders James L. Boyle and Nathaniel T. Cole and other state officials. Committees on Credentials Resolutions Permanent Organizations and rules Time and Place of Next Convention Delegates to National Convention were formed with many named members from Waterville Lewiston Portland and nearby towns. Continued remarks and speakers were scheduled for today.

Inmates Earn Degrees In Experimental Program

Three Illinois State Penitentiary inmates earned associate in arts degrees from Chicago City Junior College through a television instructional program. The graduates, Gianopulos, Matheson, and Cornes, studied since 1958 in an experimental group that expanded to 31 inmates. The program posted a 2.76 overall grade average. Matheson faces 49 years for assault and rape, Gianopulos a life term for habitual burglary, and Cornes 75 years to life for rape and armed robbery.

Five Division Parade Set For Sunday

The American Legion closes four days of convention at Old Orchard Beach with a five division parade starting at 12 30 led by parade chairman CWO Nathan Ford. Aides include CWO John Moulton and M Sgt Donald Blanchette among others with Leon Jones as reviewing stand chairman. Honorary grand marshals include Maj Gen Frank Lowe and Lt Col Lawrence Webster. Grand Marshal is Lt Col Walter Provencher with staff Swisko Maguire Grenier. Chief regulating officers are Leslie Wyman and Louis Wharff. Psychiatrist Speaks At Mental Health Workshop in York County

Representatives from nursing public service and allied groups gathered at the Sweetser Children’s Home in Saco for a full day workshop on Community Health Services Present and Past. The event, sponsored by the York County American Association of University Women and the Mental Health Planning committee, featured Dr Hana Huessy of Jericho, Vermont, discussing current problems and community solutions. Coffee breaks separated sessions, with panels on public health and law. Invitations were issued by Miss Mary G Worthley, committee chair.

Maine Native Among Victims In Brazil Plane Crash

A Brazilian Convair with 51 aboard plunged into Guanabara Bay near Rio de Janeiro. Wreckage and body parts were found. no survivors. Among the dead is Newton B. Thompson of Waterville Maine, an official of American Bond and Share Electric Co. Others on list include George Pfistern and Janet S. Latter.

State Labor Leaders Blast Republicans in Maine Meeting

In Portland the biennial Maine State Federated Labor Council heard critics of the Eisenhower administration and local Republicans. Speakers urged more federal aid for distressed regions, apprenticeship programs, and questioned Maine town management practices seen as anti labor. Democratic Senate candidate Lucia Cormier defended the state minimum wage law as a start. Arnold Zander warned cities against hiring Maine town managers with anti labor attitudes.

Memorial Proposed At Beach

Stowaway from a trans Atlantic flight back in 1929 urged Old Orchard Beach to honor the Yellow Bird flight era. Arthur Schreiber told town officials a memorial could be funded by public money and proposed annual celebrations on flight departure days after attending the 30th anniversary events in Paris.
