Gordon R. Dixon of Stockholm won the Maine American Legion department command on the third ballot at Old Orchard Beach. He defeated Alton D. Coro John W. Appleby and Sumner B. Mershall for the top post. Biddeford’s Goldthwaite House Burns In Historic Loss
A landmark 246 year old house in Hills Beach Biddeford known as the Goldthwaite residence on Flag Pond road was destroyed by fire. Firefighters from Biddeford and Biddeford Pool battled the blaze for two hours. the unoccupied building owned by Harrison Goldthwaite is a total loss with an estimated $6,000 damage. Built circa 1715 by Capt Samuel Jordan, the house played a role in colonial history and featured a strong stone wall around the property. The origin of the fire remains undetermined.

Three Die In Weekend Accidents
Three persons died in Maine over the weekend in two highway crashes and a fire. Donald A. Silloway, 42, of Hartford Connecticut, fell from a car traveling about 40 miles an hour and died of injuries after a collision driven by Robert Mealey, 35, Hartford. Passengers included Opal Merrow of Augusta. Mary Palmer, 64, died when a car struck a small truck near Gardiner. Leo Perkins, 34, perished when flames destroyed a Clinton camp. his body was found after the fire. The weekend deaths bring Maine's highway fatalities for the year to 58.

Saco’s grant was slightly higher than expected while Old Orchard Beach’s was slightly lower. The funds come from federal sources for schools whose students’ parents work on federal property.
