Grand Voiture Votes to Remove White From Constitution

The Grand Voiture of Maine of the 40 and 8 group unanimously recommended to the National committee that the word white be removed from the organization’s constitution at the 42nd annual convention in Old Orchard Beach. Registrations surged with 500 plus Legionnaires by noon, auxiliary and Legion sessions underway, and a full opening program led by department officers and volunteers.

Equal Pay Measure For Shipyard Heads To House Vote

Mingo Named Manager of Saco Liquor Store

Wesley A. Mingo, 34 Grove Ave, Old Orchard Beach, was appointed manager of the new Saco state liquor store by H. D. Stover, with the store set to open July 1 if no snags. Oscar Poisson of Kinney Shores requested a transfer to the Saco store and was granted. The staff may include a temporary clerk until business volume dictates full employment.

Bomb hits Venezuela president during Army Day parade

The president Romulo Betancourt was slightly burned and taken to University City Clinic after a bomb exploded during an Army Day parade in Caracas. Amnotte Seeks Pardon for Biddeford Larceny Conviction

Amnotte of Biddeford petitions for pardon or commutation of a two to four year sentence for larceny imposed January 27. His earlier petition was dismissed when no sponsor appeared. He claims innocence and argues his wife’s hardship and need for his support at home.

Three Named To Teach In Schools Of Biddeford

Three new teachers were appointed in Biddeford schools at a Biddeford School Committee meeting. Richard J. Wyse will teach in the Junior High and coach basketball. Bernadette M. Eagan will teach grade six at Emery School. Loreen Ann Whitehouse will teach commercial subjects at the Senior High. Final plans for a new high school were reviewed and accepted. The building committee praised Spencer Millward Associates of Portland. Superintendent Paul Larrabee may submit plans to the Maine Department of Education in Augusta for final approval within a week, with bids expected soon.

Four Die Violent Deaths In Maine Lightning and Drowning

A lightning strike on a boat near Androscoggin Lake killed 57 year old Honore Bouchard of Chisholm and his 12 year old grandson Gene Castonguay of Livermore Falls. Eight year old Dennis Castonguay survived after rescue. Additional fatalities included 18 year old Paul LaPointe of St Justine Quebec killed by a falling tree at Clayton Lake and 43 year old Major Alexander Duke, a naval radio station worker at Cutler, drowned when a small boat capsized at Gardner Lake in Machias.
