Budget Talks Aim for $44 Million Maine Plan

Legislative leaders and Gov. Curtis neared a budget accord amid resistance to align rank and file. A $44 million two year package was possible with restored university funds and added employee pay, while a separate sales tax debate loomed. Senate leaders warned selling the plan to caucuses will be tough. The House remains wary about votes for the proposal and the sales tax increase. In Augusta the gasoline tax bill rebounded with the Senate backing a one cent per gallon hike, returning to the House for final action amid amendments and a stalled constitutional measure.
