In Alfred, county commissioner Donald Cote criticizes the legislature for not approving an amendment that would let the old county jail be renovated or rebuilt. The approved bond requires a new jail to be constructed.
Augusta. County Commission Chairman Donald Cote pressed a bond proposal up to 1.1 million for a new York County jail during a one day session. Rep. Robert Farley opposed the measure, killing the bid as Cote sought emergency session amendments.
Kennebunkport leaders vote 2 to 1 to press on with a Maine Supreme Court case tied to the SAD 71 plan for a new high school. The dissolution provision failed in a June 8 referendum by 454 to 370, leaving the lawsuit over assessment and dissolution status unresolved.
In a special town meeting Kennebunk voters approved zoning changes banning new hotels motels and restaurants in Kennebunk Beach and the Coastal Residential Zone by a 200 to 74 vote. The measure aims to protect the beach area though supporters and opponents see it as a cautious compromise.
Old Orchard Beach sees rapid growth this spring with the Beachwood Motel nearing completion after a January fire and new projects on Old Orchard Street. Rodney's Seafood takeout opens Friday, two stores share a building by Olympia Corp, and A F Cote Roofing highlights block bonding. Craft Cornucopia and Trader John's Polynesian Restaurant plan openings as Beachwood Motel expansion continues.
The Maine Department of Marine Resources lifted the ban on surf clam harvesting from Cape Elizabeth to Fletcher Point at Biddeford Pool. Only the Fletcher Neck to New Hampshire border remains closed due to the red tide, with other clam, oyster and quahog fishing already reopened.
