Senate Passes Jury Trial Amendment on Civil Rights Bill

The Senate approved a jury trial guarantee for criminal contempts arising from the civil rights bill, except voting rights cases, by a 51 to 48 vote. Morton's amendment, backed by Southern lawmakers, covers titles on public accommodations employment public facilities and schools with a limit for voting rights. Humphrey signaled cautious optimism that the amendment may be adopted and help end the Southern filibuster.

Eight Die as Floods Sweep Northwestern Montana

Floods described as the worst in memory swept Montana's northwestern mountains, killing at least eight people, washing away dams and bridges, and isolating hundreds. The disaster centered northwest of Great Falls, with destruction in Augusta, Choteau, Browning, and Dupuyer. Dams broke, water rose up to 30 feet, and rescue teams used Air Force helicopters to extract people from roofs and trees.

Jet Pilot Reported Captured in Laos Conflict

Sebago Lake Aided By DED Says Commissioner Bachman

Jurists Commission Clears U S of Panama Charges

The International Commission of Jurists in Geneva cleared the United States of Panamanian charges that American troops and police violated human rights during January riots in the Canal Zone. It found excessive force may have been used to quell rioting and sniper fire, and criticized Panamanian authorities for lax actions and inflammatory broadcasts. Twenty-two people were killed and about 325 injured. The unrest followed disputes over flag flying in the Canal Zone. The commission, a private body of legal professionals, was invited by Panama’s National Bar Association to probe human rights violations.

Johnson Holding Broad Lead in Democratic Delegates

President Johnson has accumulated 671 first ballot votes toward the 1,158 needed for the Democratic nomination, with 58 percent of total votes secured. Only Gov. George C. Youth Killed On Day Of Graduation

In Bath, Morse High School senior John J. Marks III, 18, died when the car carrying him struck a utility pole on Webber Avenue just as graduation ceremonies loomed. Four classmates were hospitalized. Douglas Quinn 19 observed for back injury, Alton L. King Jr. 19 had possible left hand fracture and facial lacerations, Fred J. Hersom 19 head lacerations, and Robert Leo Marshall facial cuts and bruises. The car driven by King failed to negotiate a curve and sideswiped the pole.
