First Salle Charite auxiliary banquet honors founders

About 150 attendees gathered Sunday night for the first annual banquet of the Salle Charite auxiliary. Master of ceremonies Ray mond Bolduc introduced guests including Msgr. Aime Giguere and Rev. Valliere. Rev. Valliere spoke on Catholic social rehabilitation work with examples from Up-Hill Houses and the Doremy program.

Kennebunk Couple Celebrates Sixtieth Wedding Anniversary

Mr and Mrs Charles Hooper of Kennebunk marked 60 years of marriage with an outdoor cook out at the home of their daughter Halsted Pillsbury. Married July 11 1900 in Biddeford, Hooper a former greenhouse worker and woodcutter later gardener at Kenneth Roberts estate. They have three children seven grandchildren and three great grandchildren and attend the Kennebunk Baptist church.

Third Band Concert Set by Painchand Band

The Painchand band schedules its third municipal concert for tomorrow at 8 p m at Biddeford Memorial Field with a rain date the following night if stormy. In Groton Connecticut a young Maine sailor died yesterday from injuries in a July 2 motorcycle crash. John O Malley 20 of Eliot was killed when three dogs ran into his path while he rode the motorcycle assigned to the nuclear submarine Tullibee.

Truman’s decision not to attend deepens gloom for the Symington camp as Kennedy backers seek a majority on the first ballot. The convention mood is Hollywood festive as Stevenson Johnson and Symington address the crowd ahead of the late night program.

Congo Government Seeks UN Help Amid Congo Turmoil

The Congo government asked the United Nations to intervene to restore order after talks with U S Ambassador Clare Timberlake President Kasavubu Premier Lumumba and Dr Ralph Bunche. Hurricane Abby sweeps into Caribbean near Puerto Rico

The season's first hurricane Abby, with 75 mph winds, roared into the Caribbean and could pass about 175 miles south of Puerto Rico. A hurricane watch remained for the Dominican Republic and Haiti as forecasters noted two possible paths, either west toward the Caribbean Gulf or north toward Florida and the Bahamas.

Eisenhower outlines Latin aid plan with Cuba caveat

President Eisenhower announced a U.S. good will aid program for Latin American nations to be discussed with economic ministers in Bogota starting Sept. 5. He said Cuba would be included only if Castro cooperates, and declined to speculate on Guantanamo base tensions. He told newsmen that Khrushchev’s pledge was crude and urged broader regional cooperation to advance liberty and economic development. He authorized Herter to coordinate plans and requested funds from Congress if needed.

Two Boat Accidents Kill Three in Maine Lakes

Two boating accidents on Maine lakes left three dead. At Lake Cobbosseecontee West Gardiner a capsized boat claimed two women from Roxbury Boston Miss Wilhelmina Edney 30 and Mrs John Washington about 50 both vacationing at a lodge. At Cross Lake Caribou Malcolm A Philbrick 32 drowned when his outboard flipped during a sharp turn. body recovered two hours later.
