Few Governor favors change of Labor Day
Governor Reed reported limited backing among northeastern governors for shifting Labor Day to the second Monday in September. He returned from the National Governors Conference at Glacier National Park with only Governor Nelson Rockefeller of New York supporting the idea. Reed noted most northeastern leaders, except Pennsylvania's absent Governor Lawrence, did not back the plan. Maine's Legislature approved a Labor Day date change to extend tourist season, but only if the region adopts the shift.
